Medallions are Quest Items that are used to solve Puzzles in various Ancient Vaults in Sea of Thieves. Medallions can be found inside Gold Hoarder Treasure Vaults in Adventure Mode when opening the vaults as part of Gold Hoarders Voyages or Tall Tales in the Shores of Gold (story arc).

Mechanics

These Medallions can only be acquired as a part of either The Shroudbreaker or Shores of Gold Tall Tales or inside Gold Hoarder Treasure Vaults when opened with a Treasure Vault Key. These Medallions are the size of Trinkets and can be carried in Container Chests. All Medallions are either hidden inside Ancient Vaults or buried underground and have to be uncovered by solving puzzles. Medallions usually also have circular shaped mounds they can be inserted to and correspond to the Totem of the Vault.

Totem Medallions

These Medallions are related to their corresponding Totem Vaults and can be acquired after opening a Gold Hoarder Treasure Vault or progressing through The Shroudbreaker Tall Tale.

The Shroudbreaker Tall Tale

At a certain point of The Shroudbreaker Tall Tale, players will have to locate one of the six Totem Vaults and open them with a matching Totem Key. After this, they will have to solve a Pillar Puzzle in the Vault. Once the Pillar Puzzle is solved, a hazy image will appear on the Vault Table, showing a location on the Island with a golden circle by a Landmark. This Golden Circle will show the buried location of the corresponding Totem Vault Medallion. Three of these Medallions have to be dug up and placed on the side of the Vault Table with the maps to open up the final Vault door, revealing the Shroudbreaker Artefact.

Gold Hoarder Treasure Vaults

Outside Tall Tales, the same Totem Medallions can be acquired inside the Gold Hoarder Treasure Vaults when opened with a Treasure Vault Key. With the exclusion of the Crab Vault, the Gold Hoarder Vaults are the same as the ones found in the Tall Tales. When a Crew finds a Treasure Vault Key via Wayfinder Voyages, they can choose to open the corresponding Totem Vault for a chance to loot Gold Hoarders Treasure. These Vaults will have the three Totem Medallions hidden inside the Vault. The Medallions can be placed on scaffolding, making the Players jump and climb for them. They can be seen from their permanent white glint. When slotted in the Vault Table, an image showing the solution to one of the three Pillars will appear. The fourth pillar will be a combination of the first three Pillar images. The Pillar Puzzle of this Vault will reveal a Chest of Ancient Tributes that can be sold for a relatively high price. These Vaults are timed and will close after 3 minutes of their opening. Any Vault Medallions taken outside the Vault will disappear when it closes. Any Treasure taken outside the Vault can be kept, though.
