Lord Graymarrow is a Skeleton Lord with decades of experience in curses. He is featured in the Revenge of the Morningstar Tall Tale as a boss. He reappears as an apparition named the Ghost of Graymarrow to act as the final boss of the Fort of the Damned (Raid). It is unknown how or why the ritual brought his ghost back.

Lore

Early History

In the early days of the Sea of Thieves, a man called Gideon Graymarrow, known for treating his crew more like slaves, attended a parley held at Golden Sands Outpost. During it, he refused the offer of an alliance and magical chest to store his fortune in from Ramsey Singh, appalled by the use of magic and time that could have been better spent "drinking and fighting and looting". He would be the first to refer to the man as the Pirate Lord before storming away from the outpost aboard his ship, The Twisted Horn.

Reign of Terror

A great period of time would pass before Graymarrow would make another appearance. Along the way he caught himself a curse, becoming a particularly powerful Skeleton Lord. During his mission to rid the world of monsters and evil, Sir Arthur Pendragon led an alliance into battle against Graymarrow. When victory was just within their grasp, Graymarrow used an artefact to change the tide of war, blasting enemy ships away from his own and crashing them into Shipwreck Bay. There, he would find Pendragon, helpless as he was pinned underneath a broken mast. After inspecting his enemy's Sword of Souls, Graymarrow would reverse the weapon's effect, allowing him to instead bind souls to objects. Pendragon would be the first of many victims.

With this newfound power, Graymarrow would terrorise the Sea of Thieves, "marooning" any that got in his way.

Clash with the Morningstar

Seeking the Shores of Gold for himself, Graymarrow would relentlessly pursue the crew of the Morningstar for a Shroudbreaker Stone that they possessed. With a crew of skeletons that needn't rest, eat, or otherwise pause their pursuit, evading him was impossible for them. Because of this, they scuttled their own ship in an attempt to lose Graymarrow, though he still managed to track them down to an island in the Wilds. There, all remaining crew members were slain and their souls bound so they would never bother him again.

Revenge of the Morningstar

An uncertain amount of time would pass. An unknown crew of pirates would follow in the footsteps of the Morningstar's crew, freeing their souls before tracking down Graymarrow. Before the deadly meeting with him, Captain Slate learned that Graymarrow used a secret language of glyphs to convey messages to his followers which he wanted to keep secret, should they fall into the wrong hands. Captain Slate, however, made good work in translating these symbols. He also learned that despite his undead nature, Graymarrow still needed to rest occasionally.

With this knowledge in hand, the unknown crew of pirates would set about determining Graymarrow's location and collecting the items required to rouse him from his slumber. They would ambush and slay him, ending his years-long harassment of the Sea of Thieves.

Ghostly Return

Likely as part of an experiment in relation to the resurrection of Captain Flameheart, Old Boot Fort would be twisted into the Fort of the Damned. This fortress would be protected by Shadow of Fate Skeletons and a ghostly Graymarrow. It is uncertain what reasons his appearing at the Fort of the Damned might be.

During the events of Fate of the Damned, Graymarrow's ghost could be found on several large islands, having been successfully summoned by a rogue group of Skeletons that saw him as something of a champion. They intended to use him as a counter to the newly freed Captain Flameheart.[2] Crews of pirates put an end to the rituals.

Locations

Graymarrow can only be summoned during the Revenge of the Morningstar Tall Tale once players have acquired the Chalice of Resurrection and the Skull of Captain Douglas and place them on the appropriate Ritual Tables. The Tale Book will hint towards the location of the table. Players have to go to the location co-ordinate that is found by combining the letter and number mentioned on the two Graymarrow's Orders that the Crew acquires. The following islands can be the location of Graymarrow's boss fight: Lone Cove, Wanderer's Refuge, The Crooked Masts, Kraken's Fall, Old Faithful Isle and Marauder's Arch.

Graymarrow's Ghost can be encountered as a boss fight during the Fort of the Damned raid.

His ghost could also be found on several large islands during the Fate of the Damned event.

Abilities

Like other Skeleton Lords, Graymarrow acts as a boss fight with a large amount of health and a range of various Skeleton Lord abilities at his disposal:

  • He can switch between a pistol or Blunderbuss depending on the player's range.
  • He has a high-damage stomp attack. Graymarrow will raise two chests and slam them together, sending all nearby players backwards into the air and dealing increasing damage depending on your proximity to the boss. This attack may cause additional fall damage.
  • Summon skeletons; Graymarrow summons skeleton reinforcements to overwhelm the enemy for him.
  • Teleport: A defensive ability, Graymarrow will raise a lantern and fall backwards into the ground, hiding for a short time before popping up in a new location nearby.

Dialogue

During Revenge of the Morningstar

Graymarrow

(Before the fight)

Who DARES disturb my slumber?!
Your uniform? You're one of Slate's crew! I thought I bound you pitiful wretches and left you to rot! That curse should be unbreakable...
That means you must be? an IMPOSTER! I don't know why you wear the uniform of the Morningstar, but p'raps you'd like to suffer the same fate?
Those cowards didn't deserve t' reach the Shores of Gold! They were such worms, one of 'em jumped overboard the moment she laid eyes on me. Ha ha ha ha!
I'll cut you down just as easily, 'cept I think I'll take it nice and slow...

General Taunts

• I can smell your fear!
• Scared? You should be!
• I'm just getting started!
• You won't leave here alive!
• Your thieving days are over!
• An imposter is easy to spot!
• Is that the best you can do?
• Lookin' to be cursed yerself, eh?
• I'll hack you down where you stand!
• I'll maroon you here for all eternity!
• You can't fool me with some tatty old rags!

Shockwave attack

• Take this!
• Beg for mercy!
• Ha ha ha ha ha!
• Behold, the power of a Skeleton Lord!

Summoning skeletons

• Show no quarter!
• I love an unfair fight!
• Come out 'n play, boys!
• You'll never take us all!

Teleport move

• Pathetic!
• Not so fast!
• Not so easy, eh?
• Not quick enough!
• You can’t beat me!
• Took weak and took slow!

Notes and Tips

  • As with other Tall Tale Skeleton Lords, Graymarrow's health scales with the amount of players on the island when the fight is started.
  • Gunpowder Barrels are an effective tool to deal large amounts of damage to him at once.
  • When Graymarrow summons reinforcements, larger Crews should dedicate one member to eliminate the firearm skeletons, and another to lure the skeletons away while the rest work on killing the boss.
  • A good strategy would be to lure him in range of the ship's Cannons to kill him faster.
  • Firebombs are also extremely effective.
  • You can tell whether Graymarrow is going to use a shockwave or summon ability based on which hand he reaches into the ground with when he bends down. His left hand is used to summon, his right hand is used for the shockwave blast.
