Key Items are special Medallion like Items in the Sea of Thieves that can open various locked rooms, Treasure Vaults or Collector's Chests.

Types of Keys

There are various types of Key Items:

Fort Vault Keys

These are large round, skull embossed objects that are dropped by active Fort bosses and are used to unlock their Vaults.

Stronghold Key.png Stronghold Key Featuring a green skull, this key is dropped by the Skeleton Lord of an active Skeleton Fort upon defeat. Opens up the locked Fortress Vault filled with various Treasure.
Fort of the Damned Key.png Fort of the Damned Key Featuring a red skull, this key that is dropped by the Ghost of Graymarrow when finishing a Fort of the Damned (Raid). Opens up the locked Fortress of the Damned Vault, which is filled with high value Treasure.
Fort of Fortune Key.png Fort of Fortune Key Featuring the Legendary Mark of Athena's Fortune, this key is dropped by the Ashen Lord in the final wave of the Fort of Fortune raid.
Fortress Treasury Key.png Fortress Treasury Key Dropped by a Captain of the Fortress on a Sea Fort and used to open the Treasury Vault on the lower level.
Fortress Store Room Key.png Fortress Store Room Key Found hidden in containers around a Sea Fort and used to open the Store Room on the roof level.

Container Chest Keys

These are smaller keys that are used to unlock various types of Container Chests.

Ashen Key.png Ashen Key A small fiery key, usually received from Ashen Key Masters, used to open up Ashen Chests. Can be sold for Doubloons to the Bilge Rats
Skeleton Key.png Skeleton Key A small key acquired during Tall Tales (The Cursed Rogue & The Fate of the Morningstar), used to open a Skeleton Chest
Crown Key.png Crown Key One of the two keys needed to open Briggsy's Chest during The Legendary Storyteller Tall Tale.
Chalice Key.png Chalice Key One of the two keys needed to open Briggsy's Chest during The Legendary Storyteller Tall Tale.
Forbidden Key.png Forbidden Key Three keys needed to open the Forbidden Coral Chest during The Legend of the Sunken Kingdom Voyage.

Quest Item Keys

These are the various Quest Items that are used as Keys to unlock various locked objects during Tall Tales or Voyages.

Trapmaker's Gunpowder Key.png Trapmaker's Gunpowder Key An unique Stronghold Gunpowder Barrel that needs to be transported through the seas and trapped caves without exploding as a key for a pedestal during The Art of the Trickster The Art of the Trickster.
Skull of Captain Douglas.png Skull of Captain Douglas One of the two Key items required to be placed on a Ritual table to summon Graymarrow during Revenge of the Morningstar Revenge of the Morningstar.
Chalice of Resurrection.png Chalice of Resurrection One of the two Key items required to be placed on a Ritual table to summon Graymarrow during Revenge of the Morningstar Revenge of the Morningstar.
Mysterious Key.png Mysterious Key Used to unlock Flameheart's Lair during Heart of Fire Heart of Fire.
Old Sailor’s Key.png Old Sailor’s Key A Key hidden on Old Sailor’s Isle during the Maiden Voyage. Opens the Pirate Lord's secret Hold.
Captain's Key.png Captain's Key A Merchant Alliance key that opens the Captain's Quarters during Lost Shipments.
Oar Handle.png Oar Handle Used to repair a lever in Dead Man's Grotto during A Pirate's Life (quest) A Pirate's Life.
Poor Dougie's Key.png Poor Dougie's Key Used to unlock Poor Dougie's Chest during A Pirate's Life (quest) A Pirate's Life.
Ship's Key.png Ship's Key Grants Access to an unnamed ship's cabin that's required for the Ship of Thieves commendation, during A Pirate's Life (quest) A Pirate's Life.
Headless Monkey Key.png Headless Monkey Key Used to unlock the captain's cabin of the Headless Monkey during A Pirate's Life (quest) A Pirate's Life.
Cabin Key.png Cabin Key Used to unlock the captain's cabin of the Golden Hare during A Pirate's Life (quest) A Pirate's Life.
Brig Key.png Brig Key Used to unlock the brig on the Ferry of the Damned during A Pirate's Life (quest) A Pirate's Life.
Black Pearl Key.png Black Pearl Key Used to unlock the captain's cabin of the sunken Black Pearl during The Sunken Pearl The Sunken Pearl.
Siren Heart Hold.png Siren Heart Used to reactivate Siren Statues during The Sunken Pearl The Sunken Pearl.
Silver Blade Key.png Silver Blade Key Used to unlock the captain's cabin of the Silver Blade during The Sunken Pearl The Sunken Pearl.
Lock Pick.png Lock Pick Found and used to unlock doors at Coastal Fort during Captains of the Damned Captains of the Damned.
Mercado Key.png Mercado Key Found by the well and used to unlock the Mercado during Captains of the Damned Captains of the Damned.
Jail Keys.png Jail Keys Found held by a Prison Dog at Isla Tesoro and used to unlock both the prison cell and the door to the next area during Captains of the Damned Captains of the Damned.
Dead Man's Key.png Dead Man's Key Used to open the Dead Man's Chest during Dark Brethren Dark Brethren and Lords of the Sea Lords of the Sea.
Mysterious Ancient Key.png Mysterious Ancient Key Obtained from inside the Forbidden Coral Chest and used to unlock the hidden burial chamber in the Shrine of Ancient Tears during The Legend of the Sunken Kingdom Voyage.
Prison Cell Key.jpg Prison Cell Key Used to unlock the Prison Cell of a Sea Fort during Forts of the Forgotten.

Patch history

  • 1.4.4 (March 6, 2019)
    • Skeleton Captains and Players dropping Skeleton Fort keys should now consistently drop the key onto the fort floor, reachable by players.
  • 1.1.1 (June 5, 2018)
    • Dropping Skeleton Fort keys in water will no longer prevent them from being picked up again.
  • 1.0.8 (May 23, 2018)
    • Skeleton Fort keys will no longer drop into inaccessible locations.
