Richard Cavendish is a character encountered in the Sea of Thieves Origins "Champion of Souls" comic series. He was the captain of the Blackwyche before Sir Arthur Pendragon.

Lore

Richard Cavendish lost his family's estate due to local wars. Frustrated, he and his crew chose to take on the pirate's life aboard the Blackwyche and began stealing from both of the warring forces, though he eventually landed an agreement to become a privateer with the Empire. This would not last, however as Cavendish, his crew, and his ship all disappeared without a trace or warning.

Cavendish and his crew had found their way to the Sea of Thieves where they relished in adventures beyond measure earning themselves countless treasures. On one particular voyage they were exploring the subterranean chambers of an uncharted island and came across a mystical artefact, the Crystal Skull of Souls. To their dismay, the skull possessed a dark curse that condemned their spirits and their ship to perpetual unrest, and Cavendish's soul became fragmented and scattered throughout the ship.

By unknown means, the Blackwyche found its way back to the outer world, and was found anchored off the coast of Dragon Skulle Isle. The British Navy made attempts to approach but failed due to the ship being protected by flying demons and ghastly specters. News of the Blackwyche's supernatural circumstances reached a young aristocrat adventurer named Sir Arthur Pendragon who became instantly intrigued by the story. Pendragon set sail immediately to intercept the haunted ship and boarded the Blackwyche alone, not wanted additional harm to come to his own crew. He was fought off phantoms and skeletons and reassembled the fragmented pieces of Captain Cavendish's soul, releasing the ship from its the curse.

As a gesture of thanks, Captain Cavendish bestowed command of the Blackwyche to Pendragon, along with a map to the Sea of Thieves. The Captain asked that Pendragon find his daughter, Ana Cavendish, and recruit her as part of the Blackwyche crew, then leave her the ship once Pendragon had no use of it any longer. Richard Cavendish then parted ways with his Blackwyche as Pendragon made preparations for his own journey into the Sea of Thieves.
