"You trusting fool, your adventures end here!"

The Forsaken Hunter is the fifth Adventure in Sea of Thieves. It began on June 30, 2022 and ended on July 14, 2022. This Adventure followed the disappearance and subsequent capture of Merrick upon the Sea of the Damned by Duke and Wanda, individuals who are seeking to gain information from Merrick.

Official summary

Barely had Merrick set a pegleg on his favoured Seapost, however, before he was drawn away on some new journey – and this time, not even Larinna’s Bilge Rats can divine his exact whereabouts. There are those who suspect he’s fallen back into bad habits and will turn up in a grog-fuelled stupor sooner or later, though others are more concerned about foul play preventing his return.

Have Merrick’s recent successes brought about his own undoing, is he simply taking a well-deserved vacation, or are there more nefarious forces at work? It’s true that in the wake of ‘Lost Sands’, Merrick has made new enemies eager to take revenge upon the pirate who many consider to be a pillar of the community. For all we know, you may even be among their number…

Still, there’s no question that the Sea of Thieves owes Merrick dearly. Soon Larinna will be entreating pirates to settle that debt and see if they can bring the heroic Hunter safely home. You’ll be able to join her search and discover the truth behind this fateful disappearance for yourself when ‘The Forsaken Hunter’ launches on June 30th, a maritime manhunt that lasts until July 14th. Mark the date carefully – it may just save Merrick’s skin...

Adventure Recap before A Hunter's Cry

VIEW RECAP
Murderous conspiracies, covert rituals, unwisely buried instructions…

If you’re unfamiliar, the Dark Brethren court was first convened during the events of Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life. An assortment of villains and renegades were summoned for a singular purpose: to breach the Sea of the Damned, rouse an army of Phantoms and challenge the Ferryman’s supremacy. Had the Brethren succeeded in this ambitious act, they alone would have decided which loyal pirates were allowed to return to the land of the living, and who would be left to languish beyond the veil.

Luckily for those of us who are prone to being surprised by keg-carrying skellies, the Dark Brethren were thwarted in their efforts to seize control of our resurrections. Once the battle was over, most pirates assumed that the Brethren’s ringleaders were now scattered across the Sea of the Damned in the wake of their failure, and their threat would soon be forgotten.

As it turned out, most pirates were wrong.

Court in the Act

Though the Dark Brethren have relatively few members in the upper echelons, their names and faces will be familiar to anyone who’s spent time on the Sea of Thieves. The most influential among their number is Wanda, though she prefers to go by her Warsmith moniker nowadays. This former shopkeeper is particularly infamous thanks to her reinvention of Cursed Cannonballs, overseeing construction of The Reaper’s Hideout… oh, and that time she attempted to annihilate the Outposts with a fleet of Skeleton Ships. Happy days.

He may be the most surprising inclusion in the Dark Brethren’s ranks of rogues, but having been unwittingly manipulated by various parties during his time with the Bilge Rats, Duke had become something of an outcast. His desire to get back into the thick of things ultimately led to an encounter with the Sirens, which might have ended very badly for Duke had Wanda not recognised his usefulness and intervened to bring him into the fold. It remains to be seen just how far Duke will follow his allies down their dark path, but for now he seems content to be the bad guy.

Amaranta, by contrast, needed no encouragement to become the Brethren’s newest member and, ultimately, flee to their side in the wake of DeMarco’s death – though a bad habit of taunting her rivals is already causing trouble. Serving this unlikely trio are Phantoms who’ve pledged their loyalty for a chance at freedom rather than spend eternity in the Sea of the Damned, and their presence significantly increases the Brethren’s ability to wreak havoc.

Staff Meetings

When seeking to access the Sea of the Damned and summon forth Sea Forts for their own ends, Flameheart’s followers unwittingly made it possible for the Dark Brethren to flit back and forth between the two worlds, at least for a while. Once those rifts had healed, however, a panicky Amaranta found herself stranded in the living world and was forced to collect and assemble a number of strange artefacts according to Warsmith’s instructions.

Powered by the energy of a Siren trident and leveraging the skull of the once-formidable Gold Hoarder, the completed staff has further empowered the Dark Brethren, allowing them to travel to and fro as they see fit while establishing a base of operations well away from prying pirate eyes.

Their current hideout resembles a warped reflection of the Glorious Sea Dog Tavern, doubtlessly manifested from Amaranta’s memories – she spent many long hours there daydreaming of her rise to power, after all. And now that he’s been sent to the Sea of the Damned by way of Amaranta’s blade, Merrick also finds himself held in this Brethren bastion.

Beginning Chapter One

Larinna

Dialogue icon.png

Hey! If you're not already helping the Pirate Lord, the Bilge Rats could use a hand...

What was that about the Pirate Lord?

Word on the waves says his Pirate Legends are being sent out on a top-secret mission. Sounds like they're hunting for something...
If you're one of them, you should definitely speak with him yourself. Whatever the Pirate Lord has planned, it definitely won't be boring!
I've heard talk of shipwreck graveyards, haunted garrisons, sightings of strange Phantoms... I don't know if it's all true, but it sure sounds profitable.
If you happen upon any legendary treasures while you're out saving the world, there's a stranger in the tavern who'll take them off your hands.
As for me, I've been guiding pirates towards Flameheart's Sea Forts. Their Treasuries have some nice plunder locked inside! Definitely worth a look...

What is there to do around here?

Well, this is an Outpost, so it's mostly about grabbing supplies, buying equipment and getting ready to set sail.
If you're looking for work, you can speak to the Trading Company representatives for Voyages.
Or you could try your luck with a map from the Quest Board on the docks. Who knows what you might dig up?
Whatever you choose, you can check the signposts to help find your way around the island.
Just remember, Outposts are busy places. Linger too long and other pirates might take an interest in your affairs...

[BEGIN ADVENTURE] You wanted to ask me something?

Starts Voiceover

Larinna

[BEGIN ADVENTURE] You wanted to ask me something?

Thanks for coming to me. I'm asking everyone I meet if they've seen Merrick around lately.
He vanished from his usual fishing spot and hasn't been seen since.
Maybe it's nothing and he'll turn up with a belly full of grog, but something has me worried.
Here, I wrote down the last place he was seen. There might be a clue to where he is now.
Merrick's done so much to help us all. If he's missing, we should do everything we can to bring him home. Good hunting, pirate!

Stephen

Dialogue icon.png

Greetings, fellow cutthroat! If you've been single-handedly slaying Krakens for fun, I'm afraid to say that Merrick isn't here to buy the meat.
I know what you're thinking - surely Stephen, a ferocious pirate, must have had a hand in his disappearance? But no, I'm entirely innocent! For once.
Merrick came back here briefly after that Golden Sands business, and I saw him reading some sort of correspondence.
Next thing I know, he's off over the horizon without so much as a wave goodbye!
The missive should still be somewhere in his belongings. I haven't gotten around to stealing anything yet...

[Complete Chapter] I found the note for Merrick

Ah, we meet again! Let me guess - you're also here hunting for Merrick?
Merrick's spent his whole life on these waters. I couldn't believe he'd simply disappeared after everything that's happened, so I started my own search.
I had so many questions. Why would Merrick suddenly leave his home and family behind?
Out here, I found my answers. Believe me, I wish I hadn't.
The truth will be difficult to accept. When you're sure you're ready to hear it, return to me, and I'll show you what I discovered here...

Belle

Tread lightly, pirate... This place holds more secrets than you know.

I didn't expect to find anyone here.

No... Nor did I expect to find myself drawn to wild waters like these.
However, a lot has happened on these uncharted shores in recent days, and much of it troubles me greatly.
I won't leave here until I'm sure that I've left no stone unturned, however long that takes.
My lantern can reveal the truth to you - if you're quite sure you're ready to accept it.

[CONTINUE ADVENTURE] I'm ready to learn the truth of what happened here.

Belle

[Chapter Begins] The Forsaken Hunter: Illuminating the Truth

[CONTINUE ADVENTURE] I'm ready to learn the truth of what happened here.

Well than. It is time you learned what took place here... for better or for worse.

Raises her Lantern, revealing a phantom of the past.

Poor Merrick... Lured out here alone, only to be attacked and cut down on the sand!
I don't know who would want Merrick dead, but I fear this is his final end.
If his spirit did not reach the Ferry, he will be lost to us. Consigned to oblivion...
The only way to understand this is to learn the identity of whoever's behind that mask.
I suspect this is their journal. It's badly damaged, but along with my lantern, it may lead us to the truth.
It won't be easy, but we have to try. I owe Merrick that much. We all do.

Wonda

Dialogue icon.png

Looking to buy something? Hopefully you're not here with another note from some coward trying to upset me.
Whoever wants to rile me up with talk of my 'dear' sister, they're far too stupid to hold her interest for long.
I mean, what kind of moron leaves a clue to their identity on the back of a threatening message?
My sister's not exactly the tolerant type, especially when people get cocky and make mistakes. Oh well. Not my problem.
I threw the note away, but it's probably still around here somewhere if you fancy a laugh. As for me? I've got weapons to sell...

Madame Olga

Dialogue icon.png

The way you regard me... I sense you know something of my recent distress...
After our Sea Fort incarceration, I felt certain that more soldiers of Flameheart had arrived, to finish what they had started and bring about my demise!
Not so. My captor was unknown to me. Masked, of course, with an unfamiliar voice. Nonetheless I feared for my life! I was all too eager to pass her message to the weaponsmith.
And yet, for all her bluster, the ritual she bade me perform was a rather trivial fusion of two relics - or so I thought until I laid hands upon them.
Of course, I immediately recognised the skull. All in the Order would have! Strange, that the Gold Hoarder's remains are still imbued with such... potential...

Belle grabs the Tattered Journal and reads through it.

Hmm... Yes, interesting... Recovered relics, some sort of ritual...
Ah! A clue at last. A note sent to taunt the Weaponsmith, but on the back... a Sea Dog crest.

Belle puts the Tattered Journal away.

Whoever Merrick's killer may be, it seems they've been lurking at the Sea Dog Tavern.
We need to confront them, but the sceptre they've forged makes them dangerous.
Speak with me again when you're ready to depart. We'll face the one responsible together... and make them pay.

Upon Confronting the Killer

Masked Assailant

Kneels down, slamming their sceptre into the ground

Pirates... Always turning up where they're not wanted! I was sure I couldn't be followed...

Stands back up

I suppose I don't need this any more...

The masked figure removes her mask, tossing it into a nearby brazier, then lowers her hood revealing herself as Amaranta.

Amaranta

I've been a wanted woman ever since DeMarco died. Nobody would believe I had nothing to do with it. I lost everything!

Belle

Belle's buoy surfaces, then she hops over to the docks.

So you decided Merrick had to pay for your mistakes?

Amaranta

Amaranta turns to face Belle

Hah! Merrick's miserable life in exchange for a chance to start over, somewhere my talents will FINALLY be appreciated. It was an easy choice. Besides, there's still a lot we can learn from him...

Belle

But you killed him... His soul is lost to us!

Amaranta

Not lost, delivered - to the Dark Brethren.
If you have anything to say to him, sea-hag, now's the time.

A mystical, wispy green window into the Sea of the Damned appears at the end of the dock. Merrick is seen kneeling on the ground in front of Wanda and Duke. Belle approaches but is stopped by a barrier that keeps her at a distance.

Belle

Merrick!

Merrick

Beats his chest with his one good arm.

Don't worry about me, Belle, I can hold me tongue! I won't tell 'em nuffin'!

Warsmith

Reaches down and grabs Merrick's chin.

Won't you...?

Amaranta

Time to say goodbye to this dreary old place. Now that I've completed this staff...

Amaranta slams the staff against the dock and disappears in a flash of green light, only to reappear a moment later among Wanda, Duke and Merrick in the Sea of the Damned.

...we can move between the worlds as we please.

Belle

You can't hide from me. The Sea of the Damned is my domain.

Amaranta

Not for long. Haven't you heard?
I always pick the winning side.

The window into the Sea of the Damned closes.

Belle

Merrick knows more than he realises. We can't leave him to the Dark Brethren. I just need to find out where they're keeping him. Not to mention that sceptre...
Amaranta may think she's won, but this is very far from over.

Belle climbs aboard her buoy and disappears below the waves.

Journals

(Found among the ruined buildings on the North East beach of Wanderers Refuge)

Dialogue icon.png

The deed is done. My message lured Merrick away from the safety of Stephen's Spoils, and... the rest was easier than I thought. The thrill of the chase! I honestly enjoyed it.
What I do not enjoy is wandering up and down this forsaken beach. How can I hide if I can't find the wretched hideout?
I'm supposed to follow the river, whatever that means. Perhaps somewhere along the underground passageway? Maybe near that old campfire...
For now, this journal is a good excuse to sit in the sun while I ponder my bright new future. There won't be much daylight where I'm heading...

Ghost Ships, Soulflame Captains, Flames of Fate... All of them weakened the barrier between worlds. It was enough for us to flit back and forth as needed.
But wounds heal. Our old routes have slipped from our grasp, been blockaded or sealed away. That left me trapped here, alone.
At least the box has allowed us to stay in contact. The power to carry words to and fro, even to the land of the dead! I wonder if Morrow knows the truth.
Wanda wants my notes destroyed, but why? The book is already ripped apart; its pages repurposed for messages and orders to dim-witted Phantoms.
Once I bury the final fragments, my tracks will be covered. One day, I may even come back for them. A little memento of the day my new life began.

If we are to move freely, we must lay hands on a new source of power - one with a most unusual history. The oldest enemy of the Pirate Lord...
I never once paid any attention to those key-twirling fools in their miserable tents. Useless wretches, slaving away to serve a master blinded by greed long ago.
No, not blinded... Sister says he could see so much more with those glittering eyes. Twin Veil Stones, used to peer into other worlds at countless treasures, all just out of reach.
No wonder the Gold Hoarder went insane.

Who knows what gives Sirens their power? Not me, and frankly, I don't care. What matters is the weapons they carry.
Even once I have all the pieces, I'll need help. Not even Wanda knows the ritual to make them whole and bend them to our purpose.
Luckily, the Brethren have grown in number during their time stranded in the Sea of the Damned. Phantom pirates pledged their loyalty by the dozen.
They're not the brightest bunch, but a simple kidnapping should be within their means, so long as I give them written orders to follow.
In fact, I've just had a brilliant idea. What's that phrase? Two birds with one stone...

The mystic did as she was told with hardly any persuasion. I could have left her here, but she can still be useful to me in another way.
When Flameheart kidnapped the Weaponsmith all those months ago, he nearly brought my Sister's wrath down upon himself.
It took some doing, but I convinced her to call off the attack. We were just one ship after all. No need to bring attention to ourselves just yet...
Little by little, I've been able to widen the gulf between them. I will not allow a family reunion to jeopardise my place in the Dark Brethren.
Through Olga, I'll remind Wonda of her place in this world - the choices she made and the chances she squandered. Make sure she knows the line not to cross...
