Tournaments have been a staple of the competitive community since the launch of Sea of Thieves with many community driven tournaments created over the game's lifespan. With the addition of The Arena Gamemode, Rare Ltd have begun assisting tournaments based within the game mode.

History

Tournaments began popping up early in 2018. At this stage, Rare were focused on building up the base game and had no tournaments of their own, so many communities stepped in to fill this competitive gap. Once players figured out different techniques to merge into a server, tournaments were able to be hosted on a more frequent basis.

It wasn't until the release of The Arena that Rare began hosting or sponsoring events of their own, starting with the Sea of Thieves Mixer Invitational: The Battle for L.A.. With Twitch Rivals being a success, Rare have slowly began assisting communities with the creation and setup of their own events.
