With access to preview builds of the game, Insiders see new features in the testing phase and get behind-the-scenes glimpses into the development of Sea of Thieves before the general public.

The Insider Programme is a programme that players may enroll in to gain access to preview builds with upcoming Sea of Thieves content before it launches for the general public. Participants are also granted access to the private Insider Programme forums for submitting feedback and discus Insider topics with other Insiders and the developers.
To become an Insider, players must enroll at the official Sea of Thieves Insider Programme Hub webpage. The Insider Programme is held under a soft Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), meaning that should a player be found discussing insider information to the general public, their access to the Insider Programme will be terminated.
Insiders are also rewarded with in-game currency and cosmetics for their efforts. News and progress can be tracked through the Insider Hub on the official website.
The Insider Client
The Sea of Thieves Insider Client (codenamed Wasserburg) is an entirely separate client of the game that receives patches ahead of the public retail client. The content in this version of Sea of Thieves are works in progress and prone to contain bugs yet to be addressed.
Progression from the public client does not carry over to the Insider Client. Progression within the Insider Client is reset intermittently as needed for testing purposes.
Insider Rewards
Participants of the Insider Programme may earn cosmetic and currency rewards for use on their public client as incentives to test new builds. A reward requires a total of one (1) hour cumulated playtime within a given week, with a new week beginning every Friday at 00:00 (Midnight) UTC.
Overall there are 66 weeks-worth of rewards available to earn. Each week will reward 30 
(see note below) and an item from either the Silver Blade Set or Sapphire Blade SetThe Sapphire Blade Set[1] (see list below).
- From July 19, 2024 the required weeks were reduced from 211 weeks to 66 weeks allowing players the opportunity to earn a cosmetic item every week, with an included amount of Doubloons.
- Insiders who were at a reward week above 66 at the time of this change would be placed at a reward track week corresponding to the next cosmetic reward they were due to receive.
- The original reward track had 211 weeks worth of rewards, varying from gold and Doubloons to cosmetic items from the Silver Blade and Sapphire Blade Sets.
