Dialogue

The Journey to Mêlée Island

Upon entering the back dining room of the Scumm Bar for the first time:

MURRAY:

Is that fresh meat I spy? Tremble, mortal, before the mighty Skulls of Scumm!

CURSED CAPTAIN:

It's been longer'n a rat's tail since I last set me sockets on a would-be pirate.

CURSED CAPTAIN:

Though I could swear we've crossed paths before... But never mind all that!

CURSED CAPTAIN:

You'll be here to undertake the Three Trials, I'll wager!

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

The Three Trials! Hah ha ha hah!

THIRD PIRATE LEADER:

Ah, that does take me back! "I want to be a mighty pirate. Where do I collect my hat?"

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Well, if you're here to prove your worth to us, too bad! We're no longer in charge around here.

CURSED CAPTAIN:

Aye, and what would be the point? There's not a pirate wannabe alive who could hold a candle to the Legend of Monkey Island!

MURRAY:

No, please, not the speech again...

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

The mightiest pirate to ever weigh anchor...

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Scourge of the Caribbean! Terror of the Tri-lsland territories! Master of a thousand insults!

THIRD PIRATE LEADER:

A man who can hold his breath for sixty minutes!

PIRATE LEADERS:

GOVERNOR GUYBRUSH THREEPWOOD!

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Ahh, all that toasting of the Governor's made me thirsty.

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

Time for some more grog!

PIRATE LEADERS:

GROG! GROG! GROG! GROG!

First Interaction:

Back so soon? You've plenty of questions, I'll be bound.

How'd this place get its name?

They say the name 'Scumm' comes from a language invented by one of the first and most influential pirates, who dreamed of us all sharing a common speech.
Some called him genius, others a maniac! His knowledge and wisdom was passed down at a prestigious institute known as Scumm University.
Who can say? If it hadn't been for the drive and vision of them pirate pioneers, we might not be standing here today making such polite conversation...

What were the Three Trials?

Tests by which a pirate might prove themselves worthy of the title. There were three to be face, spread across Mêlée Island.
Trouble was, once word began to spread about the Legend of Monkey Island and all that he'd accomplished, the Trials looked pretty feeble by comparison.
So you made them harder.
That we did - but no matter how dangerous, deceitful and despicable the Trials became, not one of them held a candle to the Governor's heroic deeds.
Eventually, nobody could manage to complete the Trials, and the whole system was abandoned. Better to seek the Governor's blessing...

Tell me more about the Governor.

He may not look it, but Governor Threepwood has the strength and stamina of ten men! He's the champion of both our caber tossing AND spitting contests.
And when it comes to his skill with a blade, his insults have flummoxed the Sword Master herself!
You fight using insults?
Aye. That's a trick you'll get to learn if and when the Governor judges you to be a worthy pirate.
A devastating witticism delivered at just the right moment can throw your opponent off-balance. We pirates have our pride to consider, after all!

What about the old Governor?

Elaine Marley was her name, back before she became Mrs Elaine Marley-Threepwood. Few could win her heart back then, though many pirates tried.
She was a fine leader and just as fine a match for the Legend of Monkey Island - though there's one pirate who thought otherwise, and LeChuck was his name.
He was in love with her?
That's putting it mildly! When Elaine invited him for dinner LeChuck was instantly smitten, and vowed to do whatever it took to marry her.
Needless to say, the Legend of Monkey Island wasn't about to stand for that. It ignited a better feud between the two of them.
Ah, but that was a long time past now... Makes me all misty-eyed just to think about it!

After trading the Cute Monkey Toy with Spiffy's Femur Bone:

Cursed Captain:

Look behind ye! A three-headed monkey!

Second Pirate Leader:

Don't be ridiculous.

Third Pirate Leader:

You must think we were born yesterday!

First Pirate Leader:

You'll need to do better than that to fool us, bone-brain!

Pirate Leaders:

Ha ha ha ha hah!

After defeating LeChuck's Guards:

Dialogue icon.png

Well, that was a rum bit of excitement, and no mistake!

Is everyone Okay?

Of course we are! It'll take more than a sneak attack to fluster the pirates of Mêlée Island.
Unless, that is, something were to happen to our grog. Then there'd be scenes of chaos and calamity I shudder to think about...

The Quest for Guybrush

Before speaking to Corina:

Dialogue icon.png

We're engaged in Important Pirate Business right now. Come and see us later.

Speaking with any of the Pirate Leaders after having talked to Corina:

Dialogue icon.png

Persistent little pest, aren't you? What is it now?
I met the Governor. I'm ready to undertake the Trials.

After selecting "I met the Governor. I'm ready to undertake the Trials" in the previous dialogue:

First Pirate Leader

The Governor granted you an audience? Well, this changes matters.

Second Pirate Leader

The Legend of Monkey Island doesn't waste his time with pirate wannabes...

Third Pirate Leader

That may be so, but nobody's gone through the Trials in an age and lived to tell the tale!

First Pirate Leader

Then it'll be their funeral, and all the more grog for us.

First Pirate Leader

VERY WELL! With the Governor's blessing, we shall begin...

Pirate Leaders

THE THREE LEGENDARY TRIALS!

Second Pirate Leader

There are three devilishly difficult trials every pirate must undertake, inspired by the Legend of Monkey Island.

First Pirate Leader

You must master the sword...

Second Pirate Leader

And the art of thievery...

Third Pirate Leader

And... the QUEST!

Second Pirate Leader

The what?

Third Pirate Leader

Treasure hunting, ya sea urchin! We've been doing this for 33 years and you're still as clueless as ever.

Second Pirate Leader

I have a very short attention span!

First Pirate Leader

You must prove yourself in each of these three areas: swordplay, thievery, and, er, treasure-huntery, and gather proof that you've done it.

Second Pirate Leader

We've prepared some documentation to help you on your way, and you can always ask us for advice.

Third Pirate Leader

It's the least we can do for making the Legendary Trials so confoundingly impossible.

Second Pirate Leader

Now, your first task will be clearing away this accursed fog. A fellow can't see past his own beard out there.

Cursed Captain

Well now, if it's cursed fog you want clearing away, I happen to have considerable experience in that regard! There was a time at Sailor's Grave where—

First Pirate Leader

Not the lighthouse story again. Get to the point!

Cursed Captain

Hmph! Very well. Ye must return to the Mojo Shop and lay your hands on a mystical brew to dispel that infernal mist.

Second Pirate Leader

Is that all?!

Third Pirate Leader

We could have told them that, you dim-witted decoration!

Cursed Captain

Everyone's a critic...

(Quest Book Updated)

After having begun the the Three Legendary Trials:

Dialogue icon.png

How are the Trials going? You're not planning to chicken out, are you?

Tell me more about treasure hunting.

Do you have a map? Everyone knows you can't go treasure hunting without a map! There must be someone in town who's willing to sell you one.
Once you have a map, follow its instructions and use whatever means are necessary to find the treasure.
But I should warn you... the instructions may require a little creative thinking to interpret. Har har har!

After completing the Trial of Treasure-Huntery:

Dialogue icon.png

You've found a truly Legendary Treasure, but there's more to be done. My fellow swabbies can clue you in...

After completing all the Three Legendary Trials:

Dialogue icon.png

The lady from the Mojo Shop was asking after you. Perhaps she wants to congratulate you on completing the Three Legendary Trials!

After completing Corina's plan:

Dialogue icon.png

I suppose we'd better start searching for a new Governor... And this time, we'll find ourselves a REAL legend!
