Dialogue

The Journey to Mêlée Island

Upon entering the back dining room of the Scumm Bar for the first time:

MURRAY:

Is that fresh meat I spy? Tremble, mortal, before the mighty Skulls of Scumm!

CURSED CAPTAIN:

It's been longer'n a rat's tail since I last set me sockets on a would-be pirate.

CURSED CAPTAIN:

Though I could swear we've crossed paths before... But never mind all that!

CURSED CAPTAIN:

You'll be here to undertake the Three Trials, I'll wager!

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

The Three Trials! Hah ha ha hah!

THIRD PIRATE LEADER:

Ah, that does take me back! "I want to be a mighty pirate. Where do I collect my hat?"

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Well, if you're here to prove your worth to us, too bad! We're no longer in charge around here.

CURSED CAPTAIN:

Aye, and what would be the point? There's not a pirate wannabe alive who could hold a candle to the Legend of Monkey Island!

MURRAY:

No, please, not the speech again...

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

The mightiest pirate to ever weigh anchor...

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Scourge of the Caribbean! Terror of the Tri-lsland territories! Master of a thousand insults!

THIRD PIRATE LEADER:

A man who can hold his breath for sixty minutes!

PIRATE LEADERS:

GOVERNOR GUYBRUSH THREEPWOOD!

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Ahh, all that toasting of the Governor's made me thirsty.

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

Time for some more grog!

PIRATE LEADERS:

GROG! GROG! GROG! GROG!

First Interaction:

What be ye wantin'?

Is everyone here a pirate?

Now that's the sort of question I'd expect from a pirate wannabe. Mêlée Island is pretty much wall-to-wall rogues and scoundrels!
Granted, more than a few folks have retired from a life on the high seas and taken up other lines of work where they can.
But pretty much everyone you'll rub shoulders with has flown the Jolly Roger at one time or another. And none of us are ashamed to admit it!
Doesn't that cause you trouble?
Why should it? Governor Threepwood is in charge now, and there's no pirate more lawless, lethal and larcenous than he!
The days of being clapped in irons by the local Sheriff are long gone, and it's all thanks to the Legend of Monkey Island!

About the 'Legend of Monkey Island'...

What's the matter, y' got seawater in your ears? Let me spell it out for you...
Governor Threepwood is our 'Legend of Monkey Island'. He's been everywhere, seen it all and stolen most of it. Adventures the rest of us can only dream of.
The only way you'd be considered a true pirate is if the Governor himself declared you to be worthy of following in his footsteps.
Sounds simple enough.
Hah, oh, you think so? You can't just stroll up to the Governor's door and challenge him to a spitting contest, you know.
But there is one way. A man in town can be your ticket to an audience with the Governor - but his help surely won't come cheap...

Where is Monkey Island anyway?

They say it lies east of here, but its exact location is a great mystery to all but a chosen few - including the Governor and his wife, Elaine Marely.
The whole Monkey Island is surrounded by a strange mist that makes sialing there a treacherous prospect, unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Sounds familiar...
Oh, really? Well, most folks tended to avoid the place once the Ghost Pirate LeChuck began to use Monkey Island as his pirate lair.
Only the Governor was brave enough to bring together a crew and make it all the way to Monkey Island to rescue his beloved bride!
It's just one more reason he's held in such high regard - but I don't suppose even he knows every secret the island has to offer...

I'm looking to earn some coin.

I assume you mean Pieces o' Eight? That's the currency we trade in here on Mêlée Island, not gold or other such nonsense.
The cook could have been persuaded to take you on, but he's already hired himself a new assistant, so you're out of luck there.
Well, I'm sure if you keep your eyes peeled, you'll spot a few stray Pieces o' Eight lying around that nobody'll miss.
Of course, a real pirate would notice more nefarious opportunities to fill their pockets...

Attempting to take Murray without a replacement:

First Pirate Leader

Hey! You leave that skull alone. He's got a job to do.

After trading the Cute Monkey Toy with Spiffy's Femur Bone:

Cursed Captain:

Look behind ye! A three-headed monkey!

Second Pirate Leader:

Don't be ridiculous.

Third Pirate Leader:

You must think we were born yesterday!

First Pirate Leader:

You'll need to do better than that to fool us, bone-brain!

Pirate Leaders:

Ha ha ha ha hah!

After defeating LeChuck's Guards:

Dialogue icon.png

Back again? Did you meet the Governor?

I did... And LeChuck!

WHAT?! So that's what all the ruckus was about... He'll be up to his old tricks, I'll be bound. You did well to stand against him and walk away with your head on your shoulders. If I were you, I'd leave town now, before your luck runs out...

The Quest for Guybrush

Before speaking to Corina:

Dialogue icon.png

We're engaged in Important Pirate Business right now. Come and see us later.

Speaking with any of the Pirate Leaders after having talked to Corina:
(This dialog will vary depending on the Pirate Leader the player interacts with.)

Dialogue icon.png

What brings ye back to our table?
I met the Governor. I'm ready to undertake the Trials.

After selecting "I met the Governor. I'm ready to undertake the Trials" in the previous dialogue:

First Pirate Leader

The Governor granted you an audience? Well, this changes matters.

Second Pirate Leader

The Legend of Monkey Island doesn't waste his time with pirate wannabes...

Third Pirate Leader

That may be so, but nobody's gone through the Trials in an age and lived to tell the tale!

First Pirate Leader

Then it'll be their funeral, and all the more grog for us.

First Pirate Leader

VERY WELL! With the Governor's blessing, we shall begin...

Pirate Leaders

THE THREE LEGENDARY TRIALS!

Second Pirate Leader

There are three devilishly difficult trials every pirate must undertake, inspired by the Legend of Monkey Island.

First Pirate Leader

You must master the sword...

Second Pirate Leader

And the art of thievery...

Third Pirate Leader

And... the QUEST!

Second Pirate Leader

The what?

Third Pirate Leader

Treasure hunting, ya sea urchin! We've been doing this for 33 years and you're still as clueless as ever.

Second Pirate Leader

I have a very short attention span!

First Pirate Leader

You must prove yourself in each of these three areas: swordplay, thievery, and, er, treasure-huntery, and gather proof that you've done it.

Second Pirate Leader

We've prepared some documentation to help you on your way, and you can always ask us for advice.

Third Pirate Leader

It's the least we can do for making the Legendary Trials so confoundingly impossible.

Second Pirate Leader

Now, your first task will be clearing away this accursed fog. A fellow can't see past his own beard out there.

Cursed Captain

Well now, if it's cursed fog you want clearing away, I happen to have considerable experience in that regard! There was a time at Sailor's Grave where—

First Pirate Leader

Not the lighthouse story again. Get to the point!

Cursed Captain

Hmph! Very well. Ye must return to the Mojo Shop and lay your hands on a mystical brew to dispel that infernal mist.

Second Pirate Leader

Is that all?!

Third Pirate Leader

We could have told them that, you dim-witted decoration!

Cursed Captain

Everyone's a critic...

(Quest Book Updated)

After having begun the Three Legendary Trials:

Dialogue icon.png

Undertaking the Three Legendary Trials and you're still in one piece? I'm almost impressed.

Tell me more about mastering the sword.

First, get ye a sword. But don't think you can use any old blade! You'll need a Mighty Pirate Sword befitting the Legend of Monkey Island.
Now, you'll ultimately need to defeat the Sword Master of Mêlée Island, but you won't stand a chance without proper training.
For that, I'd recommend seeking out the man who trained the Legend himself – the formidable, the ferocious, the feared... Captain Smirk!
But the bridge to his place is currently out of commission, so, er... good luck with that.

After completing the Trial of the Sword:

Dialogue icon.png

You've proven yourself to the Sword Master, but you're not yet finished with the Legendary Trials. My cohorts will be able to tell ye more...

After completing all the Three Legendary Trials:

Dialogue icon.png

You actually did it! All Three Legendary Trials complete... We're proud to call you a fellow pirate!

After completing Corina's plan:

Dialogue icon.png

I can't believe we thought Guybrush Threepwood was a mighty pirate. The Legendary Trials are a laughing stock! Well, back to the drawing board...
