First, Mêlée Island - then the world! Mua ha ha haaa!

Murray is an NPC encountered during The Journey to Mêlée Island and The Quest for Guybrush Tall Tales in Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island.

Dialogue

The Journey to Mêlée Island

Upon entering the back dining room of the Scumm Bar for the first time:

MURRAY:

Is that fresh meat I spy? Tremble, mortal, before the mighty Skulls of Scumm!

CURSED CAPTAIN:

It's been longer'n a rat's tail since I last set me sockets on a would-be pirate.

CURSED CAPTAIN:

Though I could swear we've crossed paths before... But never mind all that!

CURSED CAPTAIN:

You'll be here to undertake the Three Trials, I'll wager!

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

The Three Trials! Hah ha ha hah!

THIRD PIRATE LEADER:

Ah, that does take me back! "I want to be a mighty pirate. Where do I collect my hat?"

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Well, if you're here to prove your worth to us, too bad! We're no longer in charge around here.

CURSED CAPTAIN:

Aye, and what would be the point? There's not a pirate wannabe alive who could hold a candle to the Legend of Monkey Island!

MURRAY:

No, please, not the speech again...

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

The mightiest pirate to ever weigh anchor...

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Scourge of the Caribbean! Terror of the Tri-lsland territories! Master of a thousand insults!

THIRD PIRATE LEADER:

A man who can hold his breath for sixty minutes!

PIRATE LEADERS:

GOVERNOR GUYBRUSH THREEPWOOD!

SECOND PIRATE LEADER:

Ahh, all that toasting of the Governor's made me thirsty.

FIRST PIRATE LEADER:

Time for some more grog!

PIRATE LEADERS:

GROG! GROG! GROG! GROG!

Talking to the Skulls of Scumm:

CURSED CAPTAIN: What business d'you have with us, now? Speak up, an' be quick about it!

Who are you pair, exactly?

MURRAY: I AM MURRAY, THE DEMONIC TALKING SKULL! All pirates hear my name and tremble!
CURSED CAPTAIN: Pah, pay no attention to that blowhard. He left his maraudin' days behind along with his body.
MURRAY: At least I can remember my own name! Not like some other skulls I could mention.
MURRAY: And one day I shall return to the waves to unleash a new reign of CHAOS!
CURSED CAPTAIN: Suuure you will. But fer now, we provide what you might call the in-house entertainment.
What kind of entertainment?
CURSED CAPTAIN: Tellin' jokes, hurling vile insults at pirate wannabes and enthrallin' folks with tales of skulduggery and misdeeds!
MURRAY: I'm just here for the insults. You stink, ugly! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!
CURSED CAPTAIN: We're still workshopping some of our material...

Do you enjoy being used as decoration?

MURRAY: I am no mere decoration! We are the esteemed Skulls of Scumm, stars of the disreputable tavern on Mélée Island!
CURSED CAPTAIN: Aye, this be a place so foul, even the roaches have to hold their breath! The floorboards are rotten, the tankards are rusty...
MURRAY: And half the customers will run you through just for the fun of it. What's not to enjoy?
CURSED CAPTAIN: In all my centuries, rve never found a better place t' hang my head! (Sniffle) 'Scuse me, I've got something in me eye-hole...
MURRAY: Don't you dare start blubbering! You can be so embarrassing sometimes...

I'm not just a pirate wannabe!

CURSED CAPTAIN: Well, maybe that holds true somewhere like the Sea of Thieves, but pirates in these parts hold themselves to a different standard.
CURSED CAPTAIN: Time was, you earn the approval of the Pirate Leaders here by completing their Three Trials.
CURSED CAPTAIN: But that was then and this is now! The only way they'll respect is if the Governor himself declares you t' be a worthy pirate.
MURRAY: Hahah, good luck with that! Threepwcud's not set foot out of that mansion for almost a year. His guards keep things running smoothly.
A year... Are you sure he's okay?
CURSED CAPTAIN: Of course! What could happen to the Legend of Monkey Island? If you ask me, he and his missus are off on some grand adventure!
MURRAY: And if you ask ME, Threepwood's gotten himself locked in a closet somewhere. And good riddance!
CURSED CAPTAIN: Just ignore him. If anyone knows how t' meet the Governor, it'll be that set of salty sea dogs over yonder. If you've yet t' do so, you should go and say hello...

This whole town seems obsessed with the Governor.

CURSED CAPTAIN: Aye, that they be! They've got their own Pirate Lord nowadays, and his name is Governor Guybrush!
MURRAY: GRRR! I told you not to use his name! It gives me a toothache.
Okay, maybe not the WHOLE town.
CURSED CAPTAIN: You'll have t' forgive Murray. He and the Governor had a falling-out a while back; something t' do with a missing arm...
MURRAY: MISSING? It was an act of theft and wanton dismemberment, and one day I shall exact my demonic vengeance!
You want revenge on Guy-- the Governor?
MURRAY: Of course! These gullible fools may think of him as a Legend, but I am not deceived. I have spent years plotting my retribution!
MURRAY: However, the customers and I have formed an eternal bond! They will never let me leave — not unless someone can provide a replacement...

Attempting to take Murray without a replacement:

First Pirate Leader

Hey! You leave that skull alone. He's got a job to do.

After recruiting Murray to the crew, by replacing him with Captain Coco:

Murray

Hey, what are you doing? I was just getting comfortable. Although...

If this is about getting to Threepwood, I'm in. I've got a score to settle! But first I'll need some kind of body.

But not just any body — a magnificent body worthy of bearing my terrifying, demonic countenance on a new campaign of terror and destruction! Mua ha ha haaa!

Picking up Murray's skull:

Murray

  • Can we hurry it up? I have many malevolent deeds to accomplish.
  • Let untold evil commence!
  • Onward to my revenge!
  • Finally! Let's stop wasting time.
  • First, Mêlée Island - then the world! Mua ha ha haaa!

Placing Murray's skull down:

Murray

  • Ugh, fine. I'm sick of being carted around anyway.
  • Let's not rest for too long. I demand vengeance!
  • Now what? Did you find something?
  • Are you sure you know what you're doing?
  • Something wrong, mortal?

Touring the town:

In the Scumm Bar:

Murray

  • I used to enjoy a grog or two, but now it goes straight to my head.
  • If it were up to me, they'd rename this place the SKULL Bar. Then people would know who's in charge.
  • You know, I've grown fond of this place. Maybe I won't destroy it when I conquer the Caribbean.
  • That mutt there tried to bury me once. Bad dog!
  • What is that terrible stench? Oh, right, the customers.

On any dock surrounding the Scumm Bar:

Murray

  • They say the Sheriff used to drown people here. My kind of guy.
  • It's so transquil... So pleasant... I hate it.
  • I heard a ship got burned to ashes here. I wish I could've seen it.
  • Know what that moon reminds me of? DEATH AND DESTRUCTION!
  • All those ships, just waiting to be plundered and destroyed! One day, Murray. One day...

At the Mêlée Island Lookout Point:

Murray

  • The fire... the endless, burning flames of perdition itself! Mua ha ha hah!
  • Ahh... such a wonderful view of my future demonic empire!
  • Why'd you haul me all the way up here? Threepwood's mansion is the other direction.
  • LOOK OUT! No, really. This guy's the lookout.
  • Hey, I can see my house from here.

On the town streets of Mêlée Island:

Murray

  • Sure is quiet... Almost... TOO quiet...
  • This place has become a real tourist trap.
  • Hmph. Not much in the way of nightlife.
  • Those guards seem kind of familiar to me... Oh well. Not my problem.
  • Nobody ever said pirates make great architects.

Upper levels of the Mêlée Island Clock Tower:

Murray

  • I don't need to know what time it is. I'm immortal!
  • This old thing hasn't worked in years. And I should know!
  • Ask not for whom the bell tolls...
  • What're we doing here? Killing time? Mua ha ha ha ha!
  • Why'd you carry me to this dilapidated rat-trap?

In the Mêlée Island Church:

Murray

  • This is no place for a demonic skull such as myself!
  • Hurry it up, okay? I don't like it in here.
  • What if someone recognises me in here? Oh, the humiliation! I'd be mistaken for a relic.
  • Did you take a wrong turn back there?
  • Well... nothing to see here...

In the Mêlée Island General Store:
(Note: Can also be triggered in the alley directly behind the store.)

Murray

  • You! Old guy! Kneel before Murray the demonic talking skull! ...Or not.
  • I guess it's true what they say. Commerce never sleeps.
  • Pssst! I hear this old-timer has a real thing for the Sword Master.
  • I could crack that safe in five seconds flag... if I still had hands.

In the Mêlée Island Jail:

Murray

  • Is this a jail or a prison? Well, it really doesn't matter.
  • I just read about this place in Hangman's Digest.
  • Locking criminals up is wrong. They should be flung into some sort of spike-filled chasm! It's the only way they'll learn.
  • Ah, a rotten place of torment and despair. I already feel at home!
  • I've broken out of a few places like this in my time...

In the alley behind the Church:

Murray

  • A circus? I HATE the circus! All circuses will be destroyed in my reign of demonic terror!
  • Looks like a dead end. Good thing I'm already dead!
  • Gunpowder Gummies are a bad habit. They'll blow the teeth right out of your skull.
  • Smells like wet dog around here.
  • Can we keep moving? I'm running out of witty remarks.

After passing under the Clock Tower:

Murray

Hey! Seeing all these ghostly guards gives me an EVIL idea.
If you can get me a new body, I could pretend to be one of them and sneak you into Threepwood's place.
Whaddaya say? There's got to be a convenient corpse lying somewhere around here.

Upon walking into the alley containing a new body for Murray:

Murray

Say, that body looks like a good fit for me. Why not let me take it for a test drive and I'll get you to Guybrush.

Upon placing Murray's skull on the new body, but missing parts:
(Note: The dialogue prioritizes missing parts in order. And the voice lines for the missing Skeletal Left Arm will not play if saved for last.)

Murray

Hmm. Nope. Can't get her started. Seems to be missing a few necessary parts. Let's see here...

  • Missing Femur Bone:
I can't rain terror upon my enemies standing on one leg! Find me a femur bone from somewhere so I can stride across their fallen bodies with pride.
  • Missing Skeletal Left Arm:
Pretty sure having hands is part of the whole 'ghost pirate' aesthetic. Find me a left arm from somewhere. Something classy! I don't want to see teeth marks.
  • Missing Skeletal Right Arm:
We just need to add a right arm and this body will be good as new. Make yourself useful and bring one to me. Then our deception can begin!

With the body fully assembled:

Murray

At last! My new reign of demonic terror can-- woah. Woah-ah-oh! Easy now.
It's, er, it's been a while since i had limbs to worry about.
All right, here we go, I'm getting the hang of this. Let's get you into that mansion!
Now, marvel at my mastery of impersonation!
Yarrr! One of the Governor's Guards, I be! I be adorin' the Legend of Monkey Island so much, and... and...
Oh, forget it.

Before setting the clock tower to midnight.

Guard

Hey, Walt! Those gummies rotting your brain? Your shift doesn't start until midnight.

Murray

Of course! I knew that. I just thought you might be, er, wanting to take an early break.

Guard

Not a chance. You know what the boss does to people who slack off. Come back after midnight!

After setting the clock tower to midnight.

Guard

Well, that about does it for my shift. You know what to do. Keep everyone out of the mansion at all costs! No exceptions.

Murray

Yeah, yeah. Do I tell you how to do your job?

Guard

You okay, Walt? You sound... weird.

Murray

Oh, it's, er... allergies. You know, from the poodles.

Guard

Oh, right. Stupid mutts almost took a bite out of me last week.

The Guard disappears.

Murray

Our diabolical scheme is working perfectly. Get up to the mansion and find Threepwood. I'll keep watch.
Revenge shall soon be mine! Mua ha ha haa!

Idle lines (after speaking to the guard):
Currently incomplete.

Murray

  • It's good to have a body again. Everyone looks so... short.

The Quest for Guybrush

Upon first approaching a sword fight location:

Murray

Cower, mortal, for you have strayed into the presence of Murray, the demonic— oh, it's you again.

That useless body you found me got smashed to pieces! Talk about shoddy craftsmanship.

Well, I washed up on a beach, there was this whole thing with a hermit crab before I gnawed my way up a vine to freedom... Eh, I won't bore you.

Anyway, now that you're here, you can provide me with some entertainment. Spots like this are great for sword fighting contests.

Interacting with Murray:

Dialogue icon.png

Did you come here to talk, or did you come here to fight?

Remind me what the rules are, Murray.

It's very simple. Block their strikes with your sword and try to land some hits of your own.
After a while, your enemy will pause to deliver an insult. You need to act fast and come back with a retort. Don't just keep hitting them! That won't work.
If you can think of a good comeback, your opponent will be stunned and give you the perfect chance to attack. Mess up, and you'll be the one who staggers.
Sometimes you'll get a chance to use an insult of your own. Whether or not they'll have a comeback... Well, you'll have to wait and see.
Oh, and don't try running away, sneaking around while they're insulting you, or any other stupid tricks. If your opponent gets bored of you, you lose!
The trick is to remember every insult used against you, even if you didn't have a good retort at the time.

How I can learn more insults?

When you get a chance to use an insult of your own, try it out against your opponent. You never know, they might just come up with the perfect response.
And if you were to 'borrow' that comeback and use it yourself in future... That's the kind of behaviour I'd expect from a real pirate! Mua ha ha hah!

Enough talk. I'm ready for a fight!

(Voiceover starts and an Insult Sword Fight begins)

Beginning an Insult Sword Fight:

Losing an Insult Sword Fight:

Winning an Insult Sword Fight:

After learning enough insult and retorts:

Murray

I've seen enough. You might just be ready to face the Sword Master without being totally annihilated.

Her location is a closely guarded secret, but I stole some instructions that should help you find her. Try and ignore the bite marks.

Now go! Challenge the Sword Master, and bring them to their knees with a relentless barrage of your most merciless insults! MUA HA HA HA!
