Gold Skeleton

The Gold Skeleton is a variant of skeleton found in the Sea of Thieves. They do not spawn regularly on islands and can only be found as part of Order of Souls Bounty Voyage missions or in waves on a Skeleton Fort.

Gold Skeletons move slower and take about half as much damage when compared to other skeleton types. When exposed to water, including rain, Gold Skeletons will rust and lose their damage reduction while simultaneously reducing their speed further. Like other variants of Skeletons, they can spawn with a Cutlass, a Pistol or a Blunderbuss, or no weapon at all (unarmed attacks). They can eat a banana to recover some of their health.

Tips and Tricks

  • They make a distinctive clanking sound while walking, making them easy to distinguish by sound.
  • Gold Skeletons take reduced damage from the cutlass and hitting one with the cutlass interrupts your combo. That said, continuously hitting one with a cutlass still interrupts their attempts to discharge a firearm or eat a banana and will eventually kill them.
  • A bucket of water, rain, or standing in the water will cause a Gold Skeleton to rust, slowing them even more and causing them to take increased damage from explosives and firearms. While this condition persists, they will be covered in a brown crusty rust. They will return to normal after enough time passes, though.
    • If no water is readily available, a well placed Firebomb or other source of fire is a great alternative as it deals full damage even to a un-rusted skeleton.
      • A single firebomb is usually all that's needed to finish off a Gold Skeleton.
      • Due to their slow movement speed, Gold Skeletons tend to clump up. Further increasing the effectiveness of fire even against Skeleton Captains.
  • Gunpowder Barrels or well positioned cannons can be very effective at speeding up a fight with Gold Skeletons, even more so then other skeleton variants.
  • The Trident of Dark Tides is another excellent way to fight them. One medium bubble or two small bubbles from the Trident will instantly kill any Gold Skeleton that isn't a captain. And the explosion from a medium or large bubble's impact can also kill multiple skeletons at once if they're close enough, making the trident more efficient.
  • If you are fighting Gold Skeletons on an island within the Devil's Roar, leading them into one of the island's many geysers as they erupt will instantly kill them.

Gold Skeleton Commendations
Name Requirement Reward
Gold Skeleton Exploder Kill 3 Gold Skeletons at the same time by shooting a gunpowder skeleton, 3 times Doubloons
Master Gold Skeleton Exploder Kill 3 Gold Skeletons at the same time by shooting a gunpowder skeleton, 10 times 10 Doubloons
Melted Gold Skeletons Use fire against 3 Gold Skeletons at once, 10 times. 10 Doubloons
Raging Melted Gold Skeletons Use fire against 3 Gold Skeletons at once, 50 times. 25 Doubloons

Note: There are multiple other commendations which these skeletons can contribute to, for which it does not matter that they are Gold Skeletons.

For example: As Gold Skeletons can spawn with Gunpowder Barrels on Skeleton Forts, they can contribute toward the Chain Reaction and Gunpowder Plot commendations. Also, the The Flame of Cursed Bones commendation can be completed by dying to one of these and fetching the flame from the Ferry of the Damned. Likewise, these can be killed while under the influence of green-colored Cursed Cannonballs to get the commendations related to doing that.

  • The Gold Skeleton was introduced during the Launch Livestream.
  • There are story elements in the out-of-game books and comics and in the game which seem to imply that the Gold Skeletons may have something to do with the 'affliction' of gold which can be seen spreading over the members of the Gold Hoarders.
  • Real gold is non-reactive and does not rust or tarnish, unlike these skeletons. However pyrite (also known as fool's gold), which shares a similar appearance to gold, is reactive and can rust.

Patch history

  • 2.5.0 (March 10, 2022)
    • Throwing water at Gold Skeletons to rust them now makes them vulnerable for longer.
    • While rusted, they will take additional damage from all ranged weapons and explosives.
