The Cutlass is the melee Weapon Item in Sea of Thieves.

Usage

The Cutlass can damage multiple enemies in a wide arc. It takes about 2 direct sword hits to defeat the weakest, regular type of Skeletons, 4 hits for Bounty Voyage or Skeleton Fort Skeletons and other Player Pirates and 7 hits for Athena's Fortune Voyage Skeletons.

Functions

Some functions will slow the player to a pace above walking speed.

• Primary Use performs a standard strike.
• Holding Secondary Use assumes a guard stance that blocks strikes, slowing the player.
• Holding Primary Use for 0.5 second will immobilize the player (slowed and cannot jump), preparing an automatic lunge attack that cannot be blocked. If the attack misses, the player is momentarily exhausted after execution: unable to move or switch equipment.
• Hitting another player will momentarily stun them, interrupting most actions (Such as movement, eating, attacking, etc.) performed through player input. This makes escaping a sword combo extremely difficult.

Special Maneuvers

These are button combinations and tactics that are not immediately obvious.

• Triple Slash Combo: Landing a strike allows for follow-up strikes with much less delay. This can be performed a maximum of three times before the combo ends, which inflicts knockback to the target if blocked.
• Block Leap: Jumping in any direction while blocking will allow the player to hop in that direction. Useful for manipulating gaps while being defensive. Allows player to jump through opponents. Useful when cornered by multiple attackers.
• Block Lunge: Performing a lunge attack during a block will remove the immobility of the wind-up. Can be used in combination with Block Leap during wind-up to dodge incoming attacks that would otherwise cancel the lunge attack.
• Leap Lunge: Jumping during a block lunge attack will propel the player forward with great momentum. Diving into the water with this maneuver will cross a great distance.

Variants

All new players are equipped with a basic Sailor Cutlass by default, other aesthetic versions are available for purchase at the Weaponsmith's Shop.

  • Using a heavy strike on top of a Ship's Harpoon will no longer cause Player Pirates to gain extra range on their lunge.
  • Other players will now see and hear intended visual and audio effects when attacking various surfaces with the Cutlass.

  • Taking damage while charging a heavy Cutlass attack will now cancel the attack, rather than triggering a heavy attack animation without inflicting damage.

  • Sword Switching – Players are now able to switch weapons/items at any point during a light sword attack. Players are still prevented from switching during a heavy sword attack.
  • Resolved an issue preventing players from switching to an item/weapon after hitting an object with a sword swing.

  • Sword Miss Swing Recovery - When swinging your sword and missing your opponent, there is an increased recovery delay before you can swing again. Players can move freely during this recovery, however, are prevented from attacking.
  • Missed strike attack wind-down increased.
  • Cutlass no longer strikes twice on-miss.
  • Follow-up strikes no longer occur when striking anything other than an entity.
  • When blocking cutlass attacks from an enemy, resolved an issue where light strikes could penetrate your block and cause you to be stunned.
