Lore
The Burning Blade Cutlass was originally the Sword of Souls used by Sir Arthur Pendragon to channel energy into the counter-ritual he and Belle performed. But as a result of Flameheart's successful resurrection, the sword was corrupted by his essence. The sword was stolen by the dread pirate LeChuck, posing as an imposter Pirate Lord, who christened the sword the "Burning Blade". He used the sword to manifest a Sea of the Damned manifestation of Mêlée Island and trap Guybrush in his dreamland. The Pirate Lord has become aware of the danger of the Burning Blade, that if it was completed, LeChuck would be able to enslave hapless souls in his way.
When Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine Marley, Kate Capsize, and the pirates chased LeChuck; the dread pirate was able to complete the Burning Blade, and capture Guybrush and Elaine. He then uses the blade to orchestrate his marriage to Elaine, but his plans were halted by Captain Kate, the Pirate Lord, and a bunch of monkeys. Once LeChuck is down, he loses the Burning Blade, allowing the Pirate Lord to reclaim it.
