If LeChuck thinks I'm still stuck in his fantasy world, he won't be expecting me to hunt him down!
I'm going to gather my things, find myself a ship and rescue Elaine before it's too late!

Guybrush Threepwood is an NPC featured in Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island as a protagonist in its story.

Lore

The Journey to Mêlée Island

After the events of The Curse of Monkey Island, the Pirate Lord invited Guybrush and his wife, Elaine, to spend their honeymoon in the Sea of Thieves. However, his ship never arrived. Fearing the worst, the Pirate Lord had recruited Kate Capsize to find pirates willing to help in his search for Guybrush, despite the fact Kate herself has a vendetta against the mighty pirate. The Pirate Lord uses the Veil of the Ancients to open a portal, allowing pirates to venture into the Sea of the Damned, finding Guybrush trapped in a dream world manifestation of the island where Guybrush began his mighty pirate adventures: Mêlée Island.

After solving a series of puzzles on the island, including getting a Meet 'n' Greet Ticket, the pirates enter the Governor's Mansion, finding Guybrush talking to himself with best-selling figures resembling himself, Elaine, and his nemesis, LeChuck. Guybrush himself then regales the pirates about his adventures and ends that everyone on Mêlée Island recognized him as the "Legend of Monkey Island" and fell asleep afterward.

When the pirates read Elaine's Letter and found some Root Beer Bottles, LeChuck appears before the pirates outside the mansion and explains that the whole act of Guybrush being the "Legend of Monkey Island" and being the Governor of Mêlée Island were part of LeChuck's plan to take over the Sea of Thieves, without the worry of Guybrush getting in his way. Seeing that the pirates mustn't interfere in his plan, LeChuck sends his ghost pirates to deal with the pirates while he sails away to Monkey Island. But armed with the Root Beer, the pirates dispatch the Ghost pirates on their way to The International House of Mojo.

Once at the Mojo Shop, the Pirates meet Corina, the Voodoo Lady, who explains LeChuck's plan, and she has a way to help the pirates free Guybrush from the twisted delusion. As she sends the pirates back to the world of the living, Corina says that she will make sure that Guybrush owes the pirates gratitude.

The Quest for Guybrush

The pirates return to Mêlée Island to resume their mission to free Guybrush. In order to do so, Corina had to make a special elixir, the Mojo Potion of Unclouded Mind, using Carla's Medallion, the Idol o' Many Hands, and the Trophy of Legendary Treasure-Huntery, all obtained as rewards for completing the Three Legendary Trials: The Trial of the Sword, The Trial of Thievery, and the Trial of Treasure-Huntery.

Once the potion has been brewed, the pirates reunite with Guybrush in the mansion. Guybrush was then greeted by Corina, suggesting that they all take a toast. Guybrush then drinks the potion, and with a mighty burp, Guybush is freed from the spell. After he wakes up from the curse, he realizes that everything about Guybrush being the Legend of Monkey Island wasn't real, and the fact that Elaine is in grave danger. So he briefly tidies himself up, with a neat hairstyle and beard. He states that he is ready to go after LeChuck on Monkey Island and save Elaine, but he has to make amends with the denizens on Mêlée Island before doing so.

While Guybrush handles business on the island, the pirates then sail back to the Sea of Thieves and await further instruction from Corina and Guybrush.

The Lair of LeChuck

Guybrush has assembled a fortune crew and hopped on the Black Pearl replica sitting at Stan's Previously Owned Vessels, ready to set sail alongside the pirates to Monkey Island to save Elaine and put an end to LeChuck's scheme. After setting foot on the island and reaching the entrance to LeChuck's lair, Guybrush realises that the Cotton Swab Key required to open the catacombs has been displaced since his last trip to the Monkey Island. However, he found a map left by a previous plunderer searching for three golden idols scattered around the island, suggesting it must be an elaborate yet thematically appropriate puzzle leading to said-key. Guybrush then sends off the pirate to find the three golden idols while he remains at the gate to keep an eye for Lechuck and Elaine.

After gathering all three idols and using them to unlock a shrine containing the cotton swab key, the pirates return to Guybrush and open the entrance to the catacombs. As they reach LeChuck's ghost ship, they are spotted and he sails away onto a lava river. As Guybrush collapses in despair and laments his failure to rescue Elaine, an onimous rumble is heard. Suddenly, The ghostly Headless Monkey crashes through a stone wall, with none other than Elaine herself aboard accompanied by Kate Capsize sailing the ship. After struggling to get over his utter confusion of seeing his presumed kidnapped wife coming to his rescue, Kate urges the crew to escape from the catacombs. However, Guybrush refuses, insisting on chasing after LeChuck and prevent him from taking over the Sea of Thieves.

The rest of the crew rally behind Guybrush and set sail after LeChuck's ship through the lava caves. The chase culminates in a naval fight against LeChuck, with the Pirates joining the couple in vanquishing the ghostly ship using Root Beer Cannonballs. The victory would however be cut short by LeChuck's unexpected reappearance. Having led the pirates for long enough to fully restore the Burning Blade's power in the meantime, he uses the Burning Blade to escape with them back to Mêlée Island.

In the town's church, LeChuck has bewitched Elaine to become her bride and, in a display of supreme irony, Guybrush to act as the marriage officiant. However, the pirates, Kate and The Pirate Lord burst into the church, making LeChuck fall over and drop the Burning Blade. The Pirate Lord reclaims the Burning Blade and takes everyone to safety, leaving the player to fight LeChuck in an intense match of Insult Sword Fighting.

After defeating LeChuck, the pirates spray him with copious amounts of root beer, making him explode in a stunning display of fireworks. GuyBrush, Elaine and Kate have assembled on the town's docks to watch the show. As Kate seems to have finally pardonned Guybrush on her unjust arrest, Ramsey then invites Guybrush and Elaine to Athena's Fortune Hideout and inaugurate their arrival to the Sea of Thieves.

Dialogue

The Journey to Mêlée Island

Entering the Tunnels of the Damned:

Guybrush

Dear Diary... Wow! What an incredible end to an amazing adventure.
I outwitted the evil pirate LeChuck, caused an avalanche... kinda... and lived to tell the tale.
Even better, Elaine and I finally got married, and all of our friends were there too. I don't think we've ever been happier!
Now all we have to do is set a course and begin our honeymoon, sailing on the Sea of Thieves...
To get there, we have to pass through the Devil's Shroud.
Elaine says it's no big deal so long as we follow the map, but I don't know... I miss seeing the stars.
I had the nightmare again. I woke up in our cabin, Elaine is gone, and at the end of my bed... LeChuck is there. Laughing at me...
It's crazy, I know. I left him buried back on Monkey Island. So why does it feel so... real?
I can almost hear the laughter...

LeChuck

HA HA HA HA...

Players Emerge "Deep in the Caribbean..."

Guybrush

But when I did get back to sleep, I had a very different dream.
I was back where it all began, on my quest to become a legendary pirate!
Back at the start of my very first adventure...

Upon Entering the Governor's Mansion:

Guybrush

So, we meet again! Then you must know why I'm here.

Guybrush (Imitating Elaine)

It's my grandfather's map, isn't it? You want to find the treasure!

Guybrush

Don't you see? You're the only treasure I need, plunder-bunny! I'm here to rescue you!

Guybrush (Imitating Elaine)

My hero! Oh, you're the greatest pirate who ever lived!

Guybrush (Imitating LeChuck)

Not so fast, you mutinous mudskipper! That's MY bride-to-be!

Guybrush

I don't think so. The only thing you've got a date with... is my sword! HAH!

Various attempts of knocking at the door, in order:

Guybrush

Knock the Door (Gentle tapping):

Go away, please!

Boldly Knock the Door (Solid knocking):

Not today, thank you! Important Governatorial business going on!

Bang the Door (The doors moved slightly and a small amount of dust falls):

I told you, no more autographs! Leave me alone!

Thump the Door (More dust falls and the doors move noticeably but remain shut):

Would you be QUIET? My wife is SLEEPING!

Barge Through the Door (The doors swing open while furniture used to barricade them shut fall and slide across the room exposing a surprised Guybrush at a desk playing with some figurines)

After barging through the doors:

Guybrush (Imitating Elaine)

Look, lootikins, we have company! They must want to hear all about your courageous deeds!

Guybrush

But honey-pumpkin, I'm busy with my memoirs! I can't be disturbed or I'll miss my deadline.

Guybrush (Imitating Elaine)

Now now, we mustn't be rude! And look, they have a Meet 'n' Greet ticket...

Guybrush

Oh, all right...

Guybrush sets down the dolls and stands up from his chair.

Welcome to the official Legend of Monkey Island Meet 'n' Greet event, your once-in-a-lifetime chance to hear all the seafaring adventures of the mighty pirate Guybrush Threepwood, straight from the legend himself.

Guybrush poses heroically, matching the picture behind him for a moment.

No food or drink permitted during the event, please keep your hands and feet inside the mansion at all times.
The Tri-Island authorities are not responsible for any loss of property, injury or death incurred during the presentation.
The legend begins right here on Mêlée Island, on the day of my arrival.
The Pirate Leaders immediately recognised my natural talents - and so did Governor Marley, who was instantly swept off her feet.

Guybrush picks up his Guybrush Figurine for a moment before setting it back down.

Unfortunately, there was one pirate who refused to acknowledge my obvious greatness.

Guybrush picks up a doll of LeChuck.

The ghost pirate LeChuck, who was also smitten with Elaine and spirited her away to the mysterious Monkey Island.
Gathering a loyal crew and the finest ship available, I sailed in search of LeChuck's pirate lair.
Having single-handedly concocted a powerful root beer to destroy ghost pirates, I cornered LeChuck and gave him the biggest spritzing of his afterlife!

Guybrush waves his empty hand, pretending to spray root beer at the LeChuck doll.

I kept the bottle. It's one of my most treasured possessions.
Unfortunately, it's true what they say - you can't keep a undead, obsessive, vindictive, demonic sea-scourge down.
I had to tangle with LeChuck again before finally ridding the world of his evil once and for all!

Guybrush blindly tosses the LeChuck doll behind him. Then picks up the Elaine Figurine shortly after.

I returned to Monkey Island triumphant, married my beloved Elaine and we set sail on our honeymoon! Then... Uh, then...

Fumbling for words, Guybrush pauses and sits down in his chair.

Why can't I remember? And what is with that weird fog, anyway? Did I...

A look of confusion washes over Guybrush's face for a moment, and he sets the Elaine Figurine back on the table.

Uh, anyway, once everyone learned of my heroic deeds, they insisted I become Governor of Mêlée Island.
And that concludes your premium Meet 'n' Greet session. Cheers!

Guybrush raises a tankard and takes a sip, places the tankard back down on the desk. He then raises his feet on the desk to get comfortable in his chair.

Thanks for stopping by! (Yawn) Be sure to check out our exclusive merchandise. We have gifts for... for the whole family...

Guybrush picks up the Elaine Figurine and repositions it laying on its back on the desk.

And please... (Yawn) Leave quietly... My wife is... (Yawn) Very, very sleepy...

Guybrush nods off to sleep in his chair.

(Snoring noises)

The Quest for Guybrush

Upon interaction:

No more autographs... Just let me sleep...

Entering the mansion with the Mojo Potion of Unclouded Mind:

Guybrush

What's with all the commotion? I'm never going to be able to finish my memoirs when everything's so noisy!

(Corina appears before Guybrush.)

Hey, I remember you! But the guards told me you'd left town...

Corina

It has been a long time, Guybrush Threepwood. Far longer than you know.
Perhaps you would do me the honour of joining us in a toast? For old times' sake.

Guybrush

I guess a little refreshment couldn't hurt. What's in the bottle?

Corina

My own recipe, brewed for the Legend of Monkey Island.

Guybrush

Well, I'll drink to that!

After giving Guybrush the Mojo Potion of Unclouded Mind:

Cheers!

(Guybrush drinks the potion.)

Yuck! Tastes like breath mints mixed with cat sweat. I think I'll... stick... to grog...
What's in this stuff?!

Corina

The truth...

Guybrush

Oh yeah? Because I think the truth is going to make me...

(Guybrush lets loose a massive burp, and after being dazed, starts to remember everything that has happened to him.)

What the...
Um... Why am I in the Governor's Mansion?
Wait, I remember... LeChuck... his sword, and then...
Everybody was there, cheering for me. Calling me a Legendary Pirate. Just like I always wanted...
But none of it was real... I've been such an idiot!

(Corina appears again.)

Corina

We all have dreams, Guybrush. Sometimes, the hard part is knowing that you have to wake up.

Guybrush

Wake up...
ELAINE!

(Guybrush then goes into another room, and quickly tidies himself up, emerging with a neat hairstyle and a shaven beard.)

If LeChuck thinks I'm still stuck in his fantasy world, he won't be expecting me to hunt him down!
I'm going to gather my things, find myself a ship and rescue Elaine before it's too late!

(Corina appears once more.)

Corina

Your plan is bold, but the Sea of the Damned is vast. LeChuck's vessel could be anywhere.

Guybrush

If LeChuck's using memories of our past for his evil schemes, there's only one place he'll be hiding. Somewhere I still know how to reach.
It's time I went back to Monkey Island!
I know you came here to save me, but I can't leave just yet.
Listen... you fought off LeChuck's crew, you completed the Three Trials... I could really use your help.

Corina

Now that the curse is broken, the people of Mêlée will no longer see Guybrush as the Legend of Monkey Island. He'll need to make amends before he can depart.
Return to the waters you call home. When Guybrush is ready to begin his journey, I shall make certain you are at his side...

Interaction after freeing Guybrush:

Dialogue icon.png

This place may not be the actual Mêlée Island, but it sure feels real. and I sure feel like an idiot for acting like I own the place!

You know about the Sea of Thieves?

Yeah! I'd say most folks in the Caribbean think of it as being... a myth, I suppose. Untamed oceans and sea monsters, tucked away in the crease of a map.
When the Pirate Lord sent us a personal invitation, there was no stopping me. I just had to see it for myself! So we followed the map and set a course.
This is the Sea of the Damned. you got a little lost.
I can't really say for sure... I think we ran into a storm, or took a wrong turn somewhere. All I can remember is Elaine calling my name...
She's still out there somewhere. I'm not going to stop until I find her again!

Kate Capsize sent me to find you.

She did? Does that mean she's forgiven me for our past... misunderstanding?
Forgiven may be too strong of a word...
Yikes! Maybe I should visit the circus and pick up a spare safety helmet. It might come in handy.
Why not settle things with a duel?
Nah. Kate's too good at insults. First she'd hurt my feelings, then she'd hurt the rest of me.
But if I explain the situation calmly and rationally, I'm sure she'll understand why I had no choice but to do what I did.
...I'm doomed, aren't I?

LeChuck wants to replace the Pirate Lord!

Ugh, same old LeChuck...but there's something strange about that new sword of his. It's so... hypnotic! I wonder where he found it...
...I couldn't possibly comment.
Well we shouldn't underestimate him. But don't worry, I know a few tricks for dealing with him and his crew.
I'll have to dig through my belongings, but next time we meet, I'll have a little surprise in store for LeChuck!

What will you do now?

The only way to get to Monkey Island is by brewing a special recipe with a very particular mix of ingredients. They might take a while to find.
Then I'll have to call in a few favours. Hopefully people aren't too mad about the whole 'Legend of Monkey Island' thing not being... you know, true.
This is LeChuck's fault, not yours.
I guess, but this was still my fantasy. I was more than happy to play along and have everyone believe I was the most legendary pirate of all time.
but I have to find a way to set things right. I'm going to need everyone's help to make it back to Monkey Island and rescue Elaine!
