The Veil of the Ancients is a quest item that plays a central role in the Legend of the Veil Voyage.
Where to find
The Veil of the Ancients is obtained as a quest item during these quests:
- The Shrouded Deep: Obtained by defeating the Shrouded Ghost, used to complete the Adventure.
- Legend of the Veil: Obtained at the start of the quest, attached to the railing near the ship's wheel. Used to store Veil Stones, placed into its empty gem slots.
Lore
The Veil of the Ancients was created long ago by The Ancients; it possesses mystical powers capable of breaking the barrier between The Sea of Thieves and the Sea of the Damned.
The artefact's power is highly sought after by Captain Flameheart as part of his plan to conquer the Sea of Thieves. In hopes to prevent this, Belle enlists the assistance of Merrick to hunt down the artefact's last known location: the belly of the Shrouded Ghost.
After almost failing to perform summoning ritual, Belle and Merrick were aided by a group of pirates and Sir Arthur Pendragon in battling the beast. Their mission was a success, and the aretefact was in safe hands, however upon close inspection, Sir Arthur Pendragon noted that the Veil was missing its Veil Stones which empower it.
It was learned that an Ancient priest hid the Veil Stones away, and so the Pirate Lord put a call out for legendary pirates who would be brave enough to venture a race against Flameheart's forces to recover the Veil Stones. A brave group of pirates met the call and found the Veil Stones. With the Veil of the Ancients fully repaired, the Pirate Lord took it away for safe keeping.
During A Hunter's Cry, the Pirate Lord uses the veil to open a portal to the Sea of the Damned leading to The Damned Sea Dog Tavern to rescue Merrick from the Dark Brethren, but the portal can't be open indefinitely, for if the crews were unsuccessful in rescuing Merrick in time, the Pirate Lord will be forced to drag all the crews back into the living world to prevent any unforeseen threats emerging into the Sea of Thieves.
During Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island, the Pirate Lord once again uses the veil to open a portal to the Sea of the Damned leading to Mêlée Island to help players find Guybrush Threepwood, fearing that he is lost in a dream world made from his own memories of Mêlée Island.
Trivia
- The Veil was first mentioned by Belle during Forts of the Forgotten.
- Similar to the Shroudbreaker and its Stones, the Veil of the Ancients gains it's power from Veil Stones.
- The Veil of the Ancients was first seen during the December 2021 Twitch Stream as a background decoration after the second lore teaser.
- The veil can be seen on the Season Six title screen, powered with five Veil Stones rather than three as seen in Legend of the Veil.[1]
- It's possible the missing Veil Stones are the two found in the Gold Hoarder's eye sockets.
