Captain Kate Capsize is an NPC found stationed outside the Capsize Charters tent at every Outpost. She offers Tall Tales from Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island.

She is a character that originates from the Monkey Island series of video games.

Lore

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge

Some point prior to the events of the game, Kate embarked on a voyage to find the lost treasure of Big Whoop, eventually not finding it and setting up her business, Capsize Charters, on Booty Island with her glass-bottomed boat as transport for the services. Guybrush Threepwood, on his own search for Big Whoop, would later purchase a charter from Kate to find the wreck of The Mad Monkey; an infamous shipwreck with a prized figurehead that Guybrush would steal the head of. Guybrush would also frame her on Phatt Island for his own crimes, landing Kate in prison and depriving her of her belongings. Whether Guybrush chooses to free her or not, she was unaware that it was him who framed her and she continued to run her chartering services.

A Pirate's Life

After an unknown amount of time after LeChuck’s Revenge, Kate realized it was Guybrush who framed her and swore her vengeance. She sold her glass-bottomed boat and shored up the Mad Monkey, which was still missing its head. After meeting with Governor Phatt and learning that Guybrush and Elaine had set off for the Sea of Thieves for their honeymoon, Kate assembled a crew to man the newly renamed Headless Monkey. Although she closely trailed the newlywed couple, she never found Guybrush and, through unknown means, died and ended up at Sailor's Grave, wrecking The Headless Monkey for the second time. Through her own memories in the Sea of the Damned, her glass-bottomed boat manifests and she set out to find a way back to the living world.

The Legend of Monkey Island

Some time later, still in the Sea of the Damned, Kate found herself on the shores of Mêlée Island. Reignited with her vengeance, she attempted to make her way to Guybrush in the Governor's Mansion, but was stopped by patrolling members of LeChuck’s crew. She shortly thereafter was rescued by the Pirate Lord, who was seeking Guybrush and Elaine after never fully making it to the Sea of Thieves. The two agree to work together to save Guybrush from LeChuck's prison so long as Kate can enact her revenge. She reinstated Capsize Charters on the Outposts with the purpose of recruiting pirates to rescue Guybrush.

After the truth is revealed about the validity of this version of Mêlée Island and Guybrush was freed from his façade, Kate and the Pirate Lord began their own plans to help pirates and Guybrush take down LeChuck. She returned to Mêlée Island and ran into Elaine, who was also trying to reach Guybrush. The two headed to Stan's Previously Owned Vessels and reclaimed a memory version of The Headless Monkey to sail to Monkey Island, with the instructions on how to reach it left on Guybrush’s desk.

Kate and Elaine sailed into the catacombs below Monkey Island and retrieved Guybrush, who anxiously realized why Kate was there in the first place. She then lended The Headless Monkey to pirates to chase down LeChuck’s ship and attempt to stop his plans, only to allow him to complete the Burning Blade and kidnap Guybrush and Elaine.

After being sent back to Mêlée Island by Corina, she plotted how to stop LeChuck as pirates storm the church. She crashes the wedding through the stained glass window with several monkeys, allowing pirates to finish off LeChuck. After LeChuck is defeated, Kate optted to not fulfill her vendetta and let Guybrush go free, returning with the Pirate Lord to the Sea of Thieves.

Cruises! Sightseeing tours! Coming soon... Hopefully.

Nice hat.

Yes, it is.
Now if that's all you wanted to say, can you go and bother somebody else? I still have a lot of work to do here.

What's Capsize Charters?

It's the name of my business. I'll be offering sight-seeing tours to shipwrecks and other attractions, just like I did back home.
I tried setting up over at the docks, but those arrogant Merchants wouldn't give me as much as a second glance. So I'm improvising.
It doesn't help that I'm missing a ship of my own right now. Even my glass-bottomed boat would be a start, but I had to leave it behind.
At first I thought maybe I could just steal a new ship, but the merfolk here have an annoying habit of bringing the original owners right to you.
Oh well. One problem at a time...

Why are you offering tours?

Oh, partly out of boredom. Also to earn coin, since my Pieces o' Eight apparently don't count for much out here.
But mostly because I'm actually here hunting for someone. Someone who framed me and oh-so-nearly got away with it.
He's in a world of trouble as it is, but one day, his chin is going to apologise repeatedly to my knuckles for what happened to me.
Not that I can actually catch up to him without a ship of my own. But by setting up here, I can make inquiries with passing pirates.
Sooner or later I'll find someone who's willing to go and find him for me. I just have to be patient.

Enjoying life on the Sea of Thieves?

It's... different, I'll give you that. There's a lot to get used to. I'm sure I saw a skeleton walk past earlier.
Where I come from, most pirates have retired or moved into other lines of work. A few of them even ran for office!
You wouldn't find many crews willing to spill their grog battling a Megalodon, or try cutting a swathe through a Fort full of Phantoms.
I swear, though, the next pirate who tries to buy my hat will be carrying their teeth home in a jar.

Initiating conversation

• Looking to see the world?
• I'm Kate! I'll be your captain.
• Welcome to Capsize Charters!

Ending conversation

• Soon I'll get back on the waves.
• Come back when we're open.
• I could use some near-grog!

The Journey to Mêlée Island

Starting the tale:

Kate Capsize

Hey, don't touch that! Not unless you think you're tough enough to track down the man I'm hunting. Everything I know is in that logbook.
I'd find him myself if I had the money to get back on the waves, but for now I'm just another landlubber selling tours.

Pirate Lord

Ah, Captain Capsize! I see you've already settled in and started making friends.

Kate Capsize

I don't want friends! What I want is someone willing to drag that pirate pretender back to reality.
Then he can have a long and meaningful conversation with the sole of my boot.

Pirate Lord

Which won't happen unless you take the time to explain our situation.
A while ago, I invited a pirate named Guybrush Threepwood and his wife Elaine to celebrate their honeymoon here, on the Sea of Thieves.

Kate Capsize

You mean a fraud named Guybrush Threepwood. Though I'd also accept liar, imposter, figurehead thief...

Pirate Lord

Guybrush accepted my invitation, but his ship never arrived. After a while, I began to fear the worst, so I began making enquiries in the Sea of the Damned...

Kate Capsize

And found me stuck there, sailing in circles in my old glass-bottomed boat. Something that looked like it, anyway...

Pirate Lord

A memory of yours, made real by the Sea of the Damned...
In that realm, people and places from long ago can come back to haunt you, mingling with all the hopes and dreams in your heart.
I fear that Guybrush has become trapped in memories of his own - memories of a distant pirate sanctuary known as Mêlée Island.
If he is not rescued, he will remain sealed in a dream-world for all eternity, surrounded by fragments of his past.
That is why I have asked Kate to recruit pirates who are both willing and able to broach the Sea of the Damned and save Guybrush.

Capsize Kate

And then everybody here will see what a pathetic dope he really is. It's a good plan.
Think they can pull it off?

Pirate Lord

I believe they can.

(The Pirate Lord uses the Veil of the Ancients to open a portal to the Sea of the Damned nearby.)

Kate learned of Guybrush's whereabouts, but was never able to reach him.
You will be sailing into uncharted territory - on Mêlée Island, things may be very different from the Sea of Thieves you know...

Kate Capsize

Which is why you should take my logbook - but don't lose it! Once Threepwood has been rescued, I'm going to make him eat every last page.

Pirate Lord

You should keep an open mind, Kate. Out here, enemies can enter the same tavern and depart as friends.

Kate Capsize

When it comes to Guybrush Threepwood, I don't need an open mind - only a closed fist.

(The Pirate Lord nods and tips his hat to the player(s) before disappearing.)

Kate Capsize

Well? Don't just stand there. Sail through that archway and find Threepwood! The logbook I gave you has everything you need to know.

The Quest for Guybrush

Starting the tale:

Kate Capsize

I see you noticed my new book. I wasn't expecting to get a package, least of all from Mêlée Island, but I guess Mojo works in mysterious ways.
Told me everything I needed to know. So now...
If Threepwood is trapped in his own little fantasy land, we get to be the ones to tear it all down. It's the only way he'll ever agree to come back here.
I've sent word to the Pirate Lord. He should be here in just a few-

(The Pirate Lord teleports next to Kate)

I hate it when he does that.

Pirate Lord

Captain Capsize has been gracious enough to inform me all you've discovered. It seems Guybrush's current predicament is no accident.
I still believe that Guybrush can become the legend he wishes to be.
He has many more adventures ahead - but first, we must free him from the clutches of his old foe.

Kate Capsize

LeChuck's a pompous old blowhard, but he's still dangerous. And if Threepwood is out of the picture, he'll go after Elaine next.

Pirate Lord

Ah, yes. I understand that he has something of an infatuation with her.

Kate Capsize

That's.. one way of putting it. Anyway, the book also says that there's a way to snap Threepwood out of whatever LeChuck's done to him.

Pirate Lord

Then it seems the time is right to return to the Sea of the Damned. Allow me...

(The Pirate Lord uses the Veil of the Ancients to open a portal in the nearby archway)

Only Guybrush knows how to reach LeChuck. You must do whatever it takes to make him see the truth!
If I were you, I'd start by visiting the island's 'house of Mojo'. Something tells me you are already expected..

The Lair of LeChuck

Starting the tale:

Kate Capsize

There you are! It's about time somebody normal stopped by.
There I was, minding my own business, when this spooky lady wearing an unnecessarily large hat comes bursting out of the water and says she has a book for me!
Is there anyone around here who doesn't just appear and disappear whenever they feel like it?

(The Pirate Lord appears next to Kate)

Okay, now I KNOW you're all doing it on purpose.

Pirate Lord

If Belle has brought word to us from Mêlée, then Guybrush must be ready go depart.
I shall reopen a path to the Sea of the Damned, so that you may join him on his journey to Monkey Island and face LeChuck together.
I must confess, even I did not truly believe such a place really existed. But memory or no, tales of the power Monkey Island conceals should be taken most seriously.

Kate Capsize

Threpwood may be a scrawny dope, but he's beaten LeChuck before. Do we really need to worry?

Pirate Lord

The sword of souls is a formidable weapon.
It was created to release captive spirits, but when fully reforged as the Burning Blade, it will grant LeChuck the power to enslave them!

Kate Capsize

I knew I shouldn't have asked. Well, what are we waiting for?

Pirate Lord

Indeed.

(The Pirate Lord uses the Veil of the Ancients to open a portal in the nearby archway)

We have come too far to abandon Guybrush now. Use his memoirs to guide you, and make sure LeChuck never gets a chance to wield the Burning Blade.
Captain Capsize and I must attend to a mission of our own...

Kate Capsize

You've got his memoirs, now get trough that archway and help Threepwood! He'll almost certainly need it.

(The Pirate Lord respectfully nods and teleports away)
