Creatures can describe the various types of wildlife encountered in Sea of Thieves.

Pets

Main article: Pets

Pets are animal companions that can accompany Player Pirates on their adventures. They are primarily acquired as purchases from the Pirate Emporium. They can be named and customised with Pet Outfits at any Pet Chests. They can be interacted with but cannot deal or take damage.

Enemies

Main article: Enemies

Enemies are NPCs that attack players. They range from weaker enemies that appear commonly with no reward to stronger, rarer bosses with unique abilities that yield lucrative rewards.

Island animals

These are animals that are often requested in Merchant Voyages and whose meat is treasured by The Hunter's Call. They can be found on large and small islands in every region except The Devil's Roar.

  • Chicken: Passive animal that frequently clucks. It can be captured in a Chicken Coop.
  • Pig: Passive animal that requires constant feeding when captured in a Pig Crate.
  • Snake: Passive from a distance, will become agitated when approached and attack by spitting venom. They can be captured in a Snake Basket and can be charmed with music.

Ambient wildlife

Wildlife that can be spotted on occasion but cannot be interacted with.

  • Bats: Found in caves and flying over islands in The Wilds. Flocks of bats may also be seen fleeing dark caves at times.
  • Fish: Found in the water near the shores of islands. (Not to be confused with fish that can be caught with a Fishing Rod.)
  • Jellyfish: Found sometimes swimming in the shallow waters near islands.
  • Lizards: Found sometimes wandering islands, basking in sun.
  • Seagulls: Flocks of seagulls will circle above floating Barrels and Shipwrecks, or follow alongside a ship.
  • Parrots: Can sometimes appear flying over island areas.
  • Rats: Found on ships and can appear in different levels depending on the amount of water in the ship.

Fish

  • Fish: Can be caught with a fishing rod at sea or in ponds. Some species will require specialised bait. They can be cooked, eaten and sold.
  • Treasured Fish: A special variety of fish that can only be caught during Fishing Voyages. They can only be sold and cannot be cooked or eaten.

Sea creatures

  • Sharks: Hostile creatures who will spawn near players at sea.
  • Siren: Hostile mermaid-like creatures that attack players at sea.
  • Megalodon: Hostile monsters who will spawn near player ships at sea.
  • Ancient Megalodon: Toughened Megalodon variants with unique abilities.
  • Kraken: A fearsome enemy that spawns on ships in deep enough water.

    • Ambient Wildlife
      • While sailing the open seas, crews may now find they are joined by seagulls who fly alongside the ship as it sails. These birds will disperse if they sense danger!
      • While out exploring islands, players may now stumble upon small lizards basking in the daytime sun.
      • Crews creeping into a dark cave may disturb a flock of bats, who will promptly flee from their hiding spot.
      • Players exploring the shallows near islands may now come face to face with a smack of jellyfish. While these floating jellies may seem threatening, fear not, they're harmless!

    • Animals will now take damage when caught in the blast of cannon fire, explosions and Blunderbombs.
  • 2.7.1 (December 15, 2022)
    • After killing a pig, snake or chicken, the audio effects for hitting them should no longer be heard repeatedly.
  • 2.5.1 (April 7, 2022)
    • Snakes and pigs have been demoted from Sea Fort Captain status and now award the correct Seasonal Renown.
    • Killing small animals while they are running will no longer cause them to slide across the ground.

    • Rats should still be present on a ship with water in it even if the player leaves the ship and returns.
    • When a Galleon’s lower and middle decks fill with water, rats will now be seen using the stairs to evacuate to the top deck more clearly.

    • When caging animals, leaving them on an island and returning from some distance away should no longer cause them to change colour.

    • After killing fauna on the islands, they should now fade out.

    • Snakes will once again attack players when placed down while inside a basket.

    • Selling a snake to the Merchant Alliance now correctly removes the snake audio effects from the world.

    • Feeding a pig no longer heals the player.

    • Chickens, Pigs, and Snakes now all drop Raw Meat.

    • Pigs can now be fed correctly after Migrating with the Ship.
    • Snakes inside baskets should now correctly agitate and attack players after migrating with your ship.
    • Snakes now correctly take damage from being shot in the head.
    • Snakes placed in basket no longer clip through the bottom of the basket.
  • 1.4.0 (November 28, 2018)
    • Upon leaving and returning to a caged Pig, it will no longer be difficult to feed when holding a Banana.
    • Snakes in baskets can no longer attack players through the decks of ships.
    • Upon charming and killing a snake, the hissing noise will no longer persist in that location.

    • Caged Pigs can now be fed again!

    • Animals now spawn as intended.

    • Caged Pigs and Chickens no longer get the cannonball impact decal applied to them if dropped onto one.

    • Being poisoned by a snake no longer shows the VFX a second time.

    • Distressed Chickens - The unsettling sound of a squawking chicken whilst caged is now... more bearable.
