The Burning Blade Cutlass, once known as the Sword of Souls, is an object-type point of interest in Sea of Thieves. It can be found in The Unicorn tavern on Ancient Spire Outpost.

Lore

As the Sword of Souls

The Sword of Souls was gifted to Sir Arthur Pendragon by Madame Olivia of the Order of Souls to aid in his mission to rid the world of evil and undead. It is capable of tearing souls away from the vessel they are bound to.

During the Return of the Damned Adventure, Pendragon attempted to use the sword to channel energy into the counter-ritual he and Belle performed. As a result of Flameheart's successful resurrection, the sword was corrupted by his essence.

At the end of A Dark Deception, the sword was seen again, its blade now red as a result of being corrupted by Flameheart's essence. The sword was stolen by an imposter Pirate Lord, who was revealed to be the dread pirate LeChuck.

As the Burning Blade Cutlass

The Burning Blade Cutlass was originally the Sword of Souls used by Sir Arthur Pendragon to channel energy into the counter-ritual he and Belle performed. But as a result of Flameheart's successful resurrection, the sword was corrupted by his essence. The sword was stolen by the dread pirate LeChuck, posing as an imposter Pirate Lord, who christened the sword the "Burning Blade". He used the sword to manifest a Sea of the Damned manifestation of Mêlée Island and trap Guybrush in his dreamland. The Pirate Lord has become aware of the danger of the Burning Blade, that if it was completed, LeChuck would be able to enslave hapless souls in his way.

When Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine Marley, Kate Capsize, and the pirates chased LeChuck; the dread pirate was able to complete the Burning Blade, and capture Guybrush and Elaine. He then uses the blade to orchestrate his marriage to Elaine, but his plans were halted by Captain Kate, the Pirate Lord, and a bunch of monkeys. Once LeChuck is down, he loses the Burning Blade, allowing the Pirate Lord to reclaim it.

When Briggsy was at Athena's Fortune, she, along with Teddy and Louise, had poured their memories into the Burning Blade Cutlass as part of their plan to cure Tasha of her skeleton curse. The cutlass was taken to the Unicorn tavern, where the power of memories in the cutlass had begun curing Tasha of her curse. Tasha also had to chain up the cutlass to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. When pirates listen to the enchained Burning Blade cutlass, It speaks of memories uttered by Briggsy, Teddy, Louise, and also other memories up to the events of The Legend of Monkey Island Tall Tales.

Dialogue

A masked woman in a red coat saying, "This will cure you, Tasha. All of us are so happy you'll be able to paint again soon! Your Mum and Dad send all their love."

 
Briggsy reminisces about Tasha...

"Tasha was Teddy's responsibility when Louise... went."
"I did what I could, coming to the tavern around bedtime to tell stories."
"It wasnn't much and I couldn't bring myself to tell her what happened."
"Butat least she could get a taste of the adventurer her mum truly was."
"She was like an only niece to me; "and I was her favourite mad auntie Briggsy!

Teddy remembers his daughter...

"Tasha always loved decorating the Unicorn. Any excuse."
"My birthday, 'er birthday. And her mum's o' course. Never forgot it."
"But especially at the Festival of Giving 'n' Grogmanay."
"She loved things to be pretty - like her - eyes all excited at the idea, sparkling in the firelight."

Louise recalls Tasha's early years...

"As a babe in my arms, my Tash would wrap her pudgy little fingers around one of mine."
"She'd squeeze them with all her might, hangin' on to me. It was like she knew somehow..."
"Knew she'd be losin' me soon enough, bless'er. She only let go when sleep took her."
"Off to the land of nod, dreaming of all them funny stories and pictures..."

A bearded pirate growling, "The Sword of Souls is a formidable weapon. It was created to release captive spirits, but when fully reforged as the Burning Blade, it will grant the power to enslave them..."
