The Hungering One is the most common type of the five Megalodon that roam the open waters in Sea of Thieves. Megalodon appear as random Encounters, when a Ship is in open Ocean. The Hungering One was first introduced as the main feature of The Hungering Deep Content Update. Additional variants were added in the Shrouded Spoils Update.
Mechanics
The mechanics of the Megalodon Encounter are identical throughout all the five variants. The only difference between the five Megalodon species are their outwards appearance (colour) and rarity. Megalodon can ambush Ships that are sailing in open waters and usually fall back when Ships get close to any landmarks, such as Islands or Rocks on the seas. A Megalodon attack is preceded with an ominous tune before the Meg snaps up from the seas behind the Ship. They will then continue to circle the Ship, occasionally charging at the Ship, causing roughly 50% damage, knocking back any Pirates on deck and leaving numerous holes in the Ship's Hull. Players can stop the Megalodon's charge by shooting them with Cannonballs. Megalodon can also submerge in water to lay low for a while. The aggressiveness of a Megalodon is random and differs every encounter. Megalodon are most commonly defeated by the use of Cannons. The health of the Meg depends on the size of the Crew and Ship.
