Trading Company Emissaries

From Sea of Thieves Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Trading Company Emissaries are Player Crews that have decided to Represent a specific Trading Company in the Sea of Thieves. Sailing as an Emissary provides Crews with various benefits, such as increased payouts and Reputation gains for Company-specific Treasure Items, exclusive high-reward Emissary Quests and bonus Cosmetics rewarded to the most active Emissaries on the seas. However, it also makes you a potentially valuable target for other crews, especially Reapers, and allows grade V Reapers to see you on the map wherever you go.

The Emissary System

Emissary Flags

Any Player or Crew wishing to Represent a specific Trading Company as an Emissary must first purchase an Emissary Flag offered by the Company Representatives. The Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls and Merchant Alliance sell their Emissary Flags to anyone who has reached at least Rank 15 with the Trading Company. The Reaper's Bones Company offers their flag for purchase to anyone who manages to reach them at The Reaper's Hideout. The Pirate Lord offers the Athena's Fortune Flag to anyone who has become a Pirate Legend. Players cannot become Emissaries for The Hunter's Call or Sea Dogs.

Emissary Tables & Voting

Main article: Emissary Tables

Emissary Flags differ from regular Flags, as they can only be raised and lowered at Emissary Tables and not at the Ship's Flag Box. After a Player has purchased a Company's Emissary Flag they have to vote to raise or lower it at that Company's Emissary Table, like they would for a Voyage or a Tall Tale.

Trading Company Emissary Tables are usually next to the Company Representatives on Outposts. The Athena's Fortune Emissary Table is always situated by the Mysterious Stranger in the Tavern. Reaper's Bones Company Tables are replaced by Shrines that are hidden away from sight on every Outpost, with the main Shrine situated in front of The Servant of the Flame at The Reaper's Hideout.

Like with the Ship Customization Chest at docks, an Emissary Table cannot be used if the Crew's Ship is not docked nearby. This is to prevent Crews from leaving people behind at an Outpost to raise and lower the flag at will. Also, once the crew has voted to become a specific Company's Emissary, they cannot use any other Emissary Tables and will have to lower their current flag. After voting to become an Emissary, Crews will be able to see small Ship models on the Emissary Table, which shows how many active Emissaries are on the seas for that Company within the server.

Emissary Ships

An Athena's Fortune Emissary Ship.

If the majority of the Crew has voted to represent a Company as an Emissary, their Ship will raise two Emissary Flags, one on the back of the Ship and a Pennant on top of the Crow's Nest. These Flags will remain on the Ship aside from any regular Flags until the Flag is lowered at the Table, or the Ship sinks. These Flags also visually reflect the Emissary Grade status of the Ship, with the pennant becoming ever larger with higher grades. If you look at another nearby Emissary Ship from your Spyglass you will hear a short tune. Emissary Ships will be more valuable than non-emissary ships, as player Crews have to actively perform various duties for the company to raise their Emissary Grade. This means that any high ranking Emissary Ship on the seas is more likely to have Treasure on board, making them targets. It is up for each Company's Emissaries whether to work together or take each other down, whereas the whole point of the Reaper's Bones Emissaries is to hunt down other Emissary Ships and sell their Broken Emissary Flags for a wealthy sum of Gold and Reputation.

Being a Reaper's Bones Emissary is a high risk undertaking, as the Company focuses on piracy, stealing and battles on the seas. To reflect this, the Reaper's Bones Emissary Flag acts identically to a Flag Of The Reaper’s Mark, showing the location of the Emissary Ship and its Emissary Grade at all times on the Map Table for every Crew on the seas. On the flip-side, once Reaper's Bones Emissaries reach Emissary Grade V, they will get a power to see the shadow of all other Emissary Ships on the Map Table, as if these ships themselves were sailing with a Reaper's Mark.

Losing the Emissary Status

Generally, your Crew will be an Emissary for as long as the session lasts, however there are two ways of losing your Emissary Status: Lowering your company's Emissary Flag or Sinking.

Lowering your own Flag

Trading Companies value the work of their Emissaries and as such, they will offer generous amounts of Gold and Reputation if a Crew decides to return to the Company Representative and retrieve their Emissary Flag. Emissary Flags can be lowered just as they are raised: by holding a vote at the appropriate Emissary Table. Any Emissary Ship that has reached above Emissary Grade II will receive a remarkable sum of Gold and Reputation for that Trading Company:

Retrieved Emissary Flag Value Chart
Grade I II III IV V
Gold Reward Gold 750 Gold 1,750 Gold 3,000 Gold 5,000 Gold

Sinking & Broken Emissary Flags

The other way of losing your Emissary Status is if your Emissary Ship sinks. Your crew will be notified of this happening. After sinking, a Broken Emissary Flag will float to the top where your Ship was. This Flag can be picked up and delivered like a Treasure item and only sold to the Reaper's Bones at The Reaper’s Hideout for Gold and Reputation. Selling your own Ship's Flag will only give you 1 Gold, however selling someone else's Broken Emissary Flag will be greatly rewarded:

Emissary Grades

Main article: Emissary Grades

Each Trading Company Emissary Ship will receive a Grade that indicates the Crew's current dedication to the Company. Every Emissary Ship starts out at Emissary Grade that offers Emissary Value for any Company-specific Treasure that is sold. The Emissary Status can be boosted up to Grade V, with Reward and Reputation multipliers for Gold, Reputation and Emissary Value rewards increasing at each Grade. Players can see their Emissary Grade progress from the Reputation Tab in the Pirate Menu or in the Equipment Radial Menu. Emissary Grades are not shared between Player Alliance Crews.

Advancing Grades

Emissary Grades can be advanced by doing various Company-related tasks while representing the Company as an Emissary. See individual Trading Company articles for their respective Emissary Reputation gains.

Emissary Grade Rewards

The higher the Emissary Ship's Emissary Grade, the higher the Crew's Gold/Doubloon, Reputation and Emissary Value gains. The following table marks the Reward and Emissary Value multipliers by each Grade. When selling Treasure as a graded Emissary, Players will see the Gold or Doubloon bonus added behind the base value of each sold Treasure in the top right of the screen, along with a small icon of the Trading Company to mark the source of the bonus.

Emissary Grade Rewards, Reputation & Emissary Value
Grade 1 Base Reward
Grade 2 +33% Base Reward
Grade 3 +67% Base Reward
Grade 4 +100% Base Reward
Grade 5 +150% Base Reward

Emissary Quests

Emissary Quests are claimed from Company Representatives.
Main article: Emissary Quests

Once a Crew has achieved Grade V as a Company's Emissary, special Emissary Quests will become available for the Crew. These are collections of Quests with high-value rewards for that Company. Emissary Quests can be claimed at a Company Representative on Outposts. An Emissary Quest can be claimed for reaching Grade V just once, meaning that players will have to return their flag and work their way back to Grade V to claim another Quest in one session. The Reaper's Bones does not offer a Quest, but a special power to give all other Emissary Ships the Reaper's Mark on their Map Table.

Grade V Emissary Bonuses:

Emissary Ledger

Main article: Emissary Ledger

The Emissary Ledger acts as a Leaderboard for the busiest Player Pirates on the Seas. Each Emissary Company has set up an Emissary Ledger that can be accessed through the Reputation Menu. The Emissary Ledger lists all of the Company's Emissaries into four tiers based on their Emissary Value with the given company:

  • Tier 4 - Top 25% Emissaries
  • Tier 3 - Top 50-25% Emissaries
  • Tier 2 - Bottom 25-50% Emissaries
  • Tier 1 - Bottom 25% Emissaries

The Ledger Scoreboards will be closed and reset at the end of every month. At the close of a Ledger, every player to reach Tier 3 or 4 (reach a higher Value score than 50% of the other Emissaries) will be rewarded with exclusive shiny Company Sails, whereas any player to reach Tier 2 and above receives a Title.

Emissary Value

Main article: Emissary Value

A Player's position in a Company's Emissary Ledger is calculated through Emissary Value. Emissary Value can only be gained from selling Company-related Treasure items to a Company's Representative while flying the Emissary Flag for that Company. Each Treasure Item has a set base Emissary Value that will be added on top of the Player's Emissary Value's total. A Higher Emissary Grade on your flag also increases the amount of Emissary Value you get for each sold item. Selling Company-specific Treasure while representing the Company with a Grade V Emissary Flag will more than double the amount of Emissary Value for the Items.

Reaper's Bones Emissaries receive only a quarter of the original Emissary Value of selling Treasure belonging to other Companies.

Emissary Value is not shared between Crews in Player Alliances.

To see a full table of the Emissary Value of each Treasure item, see the Emissary Value page.

Patch history

  • 2.7.0 (November 22, 2022)
    • Crews representing a Trading Company as an Emissary will now be shown a notification to remind them that while more rewards can be earned by doing so, they should also expect to become a valuable target for other crews.
  • 2.5.3 (June 26, 2022)
    • Emissary Flags and Tunnels of the Damned - Following the discovery of a gameplay exploit, active Emissaries passing into a Tunnel of the Damned will no longer drop a broken Emissary Flag upon leaving the server. This is a temporary mitigation which will be replaced by a permanent fix in a future update.
  • 2.2.1 (August 17, 2021)
    • When voting to represent a Trading Company as an Emissary, a vote will now only show at the Outpost it was voted on, preventing a crew from passing a vote when not together.
    • Players should now always be able to see voting daggers on the Emissary Tables, even if they were not near the table when another player started the vote.
  • 2.0.15 (May 27, 2020)
    • Ending an Emissary Session – The Gold awarded when ending an Emissary session via the Voting Table has been reduced at lower Grades, encouraging players to reach higher Grades for their payout.
    • Emissary Grade Multipliers – The multiplier bonus for rewards cashed in has been rebalanced. Grade 1 no longer provides a multiplier bonus, encouraging players to reach higher Emissary Grades for their rewards. The bonus has been shared between Grades 2 and 3 to compensate. Grades 4 and 5 remain unchanged.
  • 2.0.14 (April 22, 2020)
    • Introduced.
