The Servant of the Flame

The Servant of the Flame is the NPC liaison and leader of the Reaper's Bones. He is the adopted son of the feared pirate, Captain Flameheart. In his early life, he had taken on the name "Captain Flameheart" in honour of his father whom he had believed to be dead. Any other name he had before that point remains a mystery. It is because of this that the player community often refers to him as Flameheart Junior, or simply Junior.

His journey into the Sea of Thieves is recounted in the book, Tales from the Sea of Thieves.

Official Description

Shortly after the construction of The Reaper's Hideout, a new arrival emerged from the shadows and began to accept treasure – and broken Emissary Flags – in the name of The Reaper’s Bones. In this way, the Servant of the Flame seeks to throw the Trading Companies into disarray, discouraging pirates from sailing as their Emissaries and weakening their influence upon the waves.

While he is known to be the adopted son of Captain Flameheart, the Servant's full identity remains a mystery. His dedication to the Reapers, however, leaves little doubt of his intentions. Now that he's successfully orchestrated his father's resurrection, he's ready to bring the fight to the Pirate Lord...[2]

Lore

Early Life

After attacking a ship, Captain Flameheart would board it before it sank and save a baby for reasons unknown. He would raise the child as his own and used the riches plundered as a fearsome pirate to provide the best for his son. Junior would lead a charmed life, happy and well-educated. During his visits, his adoptive father would tell him about his adventures in the Sea of Thieves until eventually, he never returned from one.

Despite his good life, Junior yearned to live as a pirate rather than be a scholar bound to books and chained by the expectations set on him by society. Inspired by his father's exploits, Junior sought to live up to his father's memory and lead a life at sea.

Following his father's death, Junior could no longer resist the call of adventure. Taking up his father's name, he was determined to find his way to the Sea of Thieves. At first, he had no success in finding a crew as no one took his words seriously, but then one night in a tavern he awoke from a drunken slumber to find a single Ancient Coins had mysteriously appeared on the table in front of him. Seizing the opportunity, he made a trade with the pirate Isidro: the Ancient Coin for a crew and ship: the Silver Blade. Now finally with a ship and crew of his own, he set sail for the world beyond the Devil's Shroud.

Becoming Cursed

Upon arriving in the Sea of Thieves, Junior followed Isidro's advice to seek out a strange, tattooed old woman who gave him a treasure map. Unbeknownst to him, the map led the way to a cursed chest; a chest that the Merfolk became agitated in the presence of and may attract Krakens. Despite the unnatural nature of this chest, Junior was convinced this was his path to fame and glory, equalling that of his late father. Soon after the chest was stowed aboard, the Silver Blade was ambushed by competing pirates. In desperation, Junior took his ship into the mist of the Devil's Shroud, unaware of what it was. The Silver Blade was ripped apart by the deadly fog, and the chest was lost to the depths.

Stranded on an unknown island, the crew was beckoned into a cave by a riddle leading to a golden chalice of unending water. After drinking from the chalice, the crew ventured deeper into the cave in search of more treasure, slowly losing their minds, flesh, and human needs, until they were transformed into Skeletons. Only Junior retained his memories, making him a Skeleton Lord.

At the end of the cave was a Skeleton who called himself 'The Cap'n'. He claimed to be a former crewmate of Junior's father on the Burning Blade before Flameheart Senior took over and marooned him on an island. It was The Cap'n who created the riddle, luring Junior and his crew to drink from the cursed chalice. The Cap'n took Junior under his wing.

For unknown reasons, Junior ended up on a beach, supposedly dormant, where he was discovered by Marisabel 'Bel' Diving and Nine-Cat Nura. They found him holding his journal, which they read and added little comments to before continuing the journal with their own story. For a time, they even gave him nicknames such as 'Faintheart' and 'Mr. Bones', though they slowly came around to his moniker. After Bel discovered the wreck of the Silver Blade and the cursed chest in its brig, Junior disappeared from the beach.

Junior's whereabouts and activities were unknown for a time.

Devotion to the Flame

After some point, Junior would learn that what he knew of his father's fate was false, that his father had been living in the Sea of Thieves as a Skeleton Lord, and that he became soul-bound to his own skull. Now aware of this truth, Junior cut his ties to the Cap'n and devoted himself to reuniting with his father.

Following this, Junior would find himself hunted by a pair of pirates. In the chaos, he succeeded in avoiding them but lost track of where he was going and went tumbling off a high cliff, landing on rocks below and shattering his skeletal body. After a time, Wanda the Warsmith — a weaponsmith turned skeleton who had also sworn allegiance to Flameheart — would come upon his broken body and put him back together, as well as give him his mask. She then educated him about his father. Through this new knowledge, Junior decided that he would raise an army and become a servant for his father.

Together they formulated a grand scheme for Flameheart's return. This included freeing Sir Arthur Pendragon's trapped soul. Taking advantage of his virtuous nature, they would trick him into releasing Flameheart's soul with his enchanted Sword of Souls.

This freeing of Flameheart brought forth Ashen Skeletons, Ashen Lords, and fleets of ghostly ships, but that was only the beginning.

While the Sea of Thieves was preoccupied with new ashen threats, the Servant of the Flame and Wanda pushed their plans forward. She oversaw the upper construction of their base of operation, the Reaper's Hideout, while he worked on the underground section. Once the hideout was complete, the Servant took the lead role of their Company, the Reaper's Bones, with which they could lure pirates who sought a vision of true piracy into devoting themselves to Flameheart's cause.

Bridging Worlds

Though Flameheart's spirit had been freed and a following had been amassed via the Reaper's Bones Company, there was still much to be done to secure his father's reign.

With Wanda having abandoned the Reaper's Bones, Flameheart sought out a new warsmith in her sister, Wonda. With this in mind, the Servant led an attack on Golden Sands Outpost, kidnapping her and the rest of its denizens.

Golden Sands Outpost would play a crucial role in Flameheart's goal to destroy the barrier between the world of the Sea of the Damned and the Sea of Thieves. The Outpost was only one of many islands shrouded in the Fog of the Damned via dark rituals, catching the attention of many Pirates, as well as Belle's. While investigating previous happenings at Shipwreck Bay, Pirates would unwittingly play a part in Shrouded Islands by vanquishing Soulflame Captains whose defeat released energy that allowed Flameheart to manifest six Sea Forts from the Sea of the Damned across the Sea of Thieves.

The Veil of the Ancients

As this bridging of worlds was temporary, the Servant sought a more permanent solution that would completely tear down the veil between worlds. He would need to acquire the Veil of the Ancients, a powerful Ancient artefact. Knowing he'd caught the attention of Belle, he used her determination to stop him in his favour as she had managed to locate the artefact with help of Merrick. Though a Ghost Fleet was sent to intercept the artefact before Belle could secure it, Sir Arthur Pendragon arrived at the last moment to help Belle, Merrick, and the Pirates that were assisting them. The artefact would end up in the possession of the Pirate Lord, but the Servant saw this as a minor setback as the artefact lacked a complete set of Veil Stones, which acted as its power source.

He would continue to stalk Belle and the Pirate Lord as they sought the Veil Stones, waiting for an opportunity to strike and procure the fully powered artefact for himself.

During Legend of the Veil, multiple letters sent by the Servant would be intercepted, hinting at where the players were to go next depending on the quest.

During the Haunted Islands chapter, it is revealed by the letters and Belle that he had Reapers stalking her as she brought the Enchanted Lantern to find the Veil Stone via the memories of the Ancients hid.

In the Shipwreck Graveyards chapter, the Servant became enraged as he learned that his fleet carrying the Veil Stone was attacked by Sirens, sinking the ships. He had hoped to retrieve the stone before it sunk into the depths.

In the final chapter, the Servant becomes desperate to protect the final stone. It is hidden within a large fort, surrounded by three smaller emplacements and guarded by a Ghost Fleet, which his father had summoned from the Sea of the Damned, further protected by a giant, swirling tornado.

However, it all failed as Pirates were able to retrieve the stones.

The Battle for Golden Sands

Upon learning from his spy that Merrick intended to rebuild Golden Sands Outpost, he countered by calling out for Pirates to serve the Reapers and keep Golden Sands in ruins. During the Lost Sands Adventure, Larinna would tell players to investigate a shadowy figure on Wanderer's Refuge which would be the Servant. He would then tell them to meet him at the Reaper's Hideout.

Should they choose the Servant's Path, he would give players a Soulflame rowboat to use to collect and deliver Relic Caches before taking the rowboat to Golden Sands to detonate it there, releasing its energy.

Despite his plan, Merrick and like-minded Pirates gathered enough supplies and dug up enough Relic Caches to save Golden Sands from being lost to the shroud.

The Time of Resurrection

Following the failed attempt to collect the Veil of the Ancients and the Veil Stones, the Servant would continue to spy on Belle. During this period, she would call upon Pirates to collect the skull fragments of the Great Warrior to help her fulfil a promise of freeing his soul. Once they were delivered to her, she performed the necessary ritual.

With this new knowledge in hand, the Servant would find Stitcher Jim and explain to him that the curse he now bore was not a result of being betrayed, but rather a reward from Flameheart. With Jim back in their service and with the knowledge observed from Belle, Flameheart's skull would be repaired by Jim.

This allowed for an attempt to bring Flameheart's soul to his body to be made by Jim, now the Herald of the Flame, using the power of the Devil's Roar. At Belle's behest, Pirates would thwart this event at Molten Sands Fortress, leading to the second destruction of Flameheart's skull. Reapers would collect the rest of his remains and the Herald's skull to use in place of Flameheart's in yet another ritual.

Setting up a ritual table and his father's remains outside of the building on The Reaper's Hideout, the Servant would once again call upon Pirates to aid him. With the Time of Resurrection upon this Festival of the Damned, Flameheart's return was inevitable. Belle and Sir Arthur Pendragon would attempt to counter the Reapers' ritual by performing one of their own, intending to summon Flameheart's spirit and banish him to a distant part of the Sea of the Damned.

More Pirates aided the Servant, however, ensuring Flameheart's return, banishing Pendragon in his place.

Accept the Shanty of Flame

You have served us well, pirate, it is true. Burned a pathway through those Athena's fools!
You are a loyal Reaper and a Servant Champion of the Flame.
There is but one last gift we can bestow upon you. If you have the stomach for it.
It is time to descend to hear the Voice of the Flame. Perhaps my father, too.
Accept this shanty and you may open up the pit.

I'm a Warrior of the Flame and have performed the Ritual! How else may I serve the Flame?

Your loyalty to the Reapers and the Servants of the Flame is exemplary. Even I am impressed!
It is true you have destroyed much in blazing your path to glory.
But if I have learned anything, it is that it is never enough to simply serve.
You must fight on! And on and on! Until we have beaten the poltroon puppets of the Pirate Lord
And sent every last ship that bears his Flag to the depths in disgrace!

Trivia

  • The filename to an official promotional image of the Servant is "Sarwan.jpg", which might have been a hint towards his identity. The name may be of Indian origin, generally meaning "God", or alternately meaning "Explorer".
  • The Servant of the Flame's voice is different in the Festival of Giving Twitch Stream (2021) and the Shrouded Islands Adventure from the earlier voice used.
  • As of Lost Sands, his voice lines have been updated to match more closely to what's heard in the recent trailers for Adventures.
  • Before being confirmed as Flameheart Junior, the Servant of the Flame was only referred to with they/them pronouns, such as in the journals written by Glitterbeard, to maintain an air of ambiguity to his identity.
  • The Servant was first confirmed as Flameheart Junior in the Festival of Giving Twitch Stream, then finally in-game during Shrouded Islands.
  • Flameheart Junior describes himself in Tales from the Sea of Thieves as wearing a loose linen shirt that had the left cuff torn off, dark breeches that may have originally been bright red, a brighter but still matching tunic that was too heavy to wear indoors, woolen stockings, and secondhand black buckled shoes. He also had a huge, broadcloth coat that smelled too much like its previous owner that he only wore in the rain.
  • Flameheart Junior's spyglass was originally his father's.
  • Flameheart Junior mentions that he was in his 20s the last time he tried to grow a beard, likely putting his age somewhere in his 30s when he entered the Sea of Thieves.
  • Flameheart Junior's crew on the Silver Blade consisted of Red Rosie, Tomas and Isidro.
  • The Shanty "Becalmed" was composed by the crew of the Silver Blade when they found themselves adrift at sea without wind for their sails.
  • Flameheart Junior originally wanted to rename the Silver Blade to "Liberdade", meaning "freedom" in Portuguese. He was discouraged from doing this as such a thing may have brought bad luck upon them.
