Burning Blade (World Event)
This article is about the World Event. For other objects and items of the same name, see Burning Blade (disambiguation). For the ship important to the story of Sea of Thieves, see Burning Blade. |
The Burning Blade is a World Event consisting of a singular-crewed Skeleton Ship, which can be captured and controlled by Player Pirates.
The World Event
When the World Event spawns, it will appear with a fiery-orange swirl hovering above it, visible from a far distance, as well as a marker on the Map Table, with no Reaper's Bones Emissary raised or any Tribute attributed towards it. This indicates that the Burning Blade is operated by Obsidian Skeletons.
The Burning Blade behaves like a roaming Skeleton Ship, peacefully sailing between Skeleton Camps found throughout the Sea of Thieves. The Burning Blade may become aggressive to a player's ship if:
- A ship with a player on it sails too close to it
- A ship fires at the skeletons or the ship in any way
Due to the large crew size of the Burning Blade, the Obsidian Skeletons manning it can repair very quickly. However, they are not equipped with buckets and cannot bail water from their ship if it takes damage. When aggressive, the Skeletons aboard fire a range of Cannonballs, including Bone Callers and Firebombs. Furthermore the Obsidian Skeletons may use the Ashen Roar, a devastating weapon that shoots twin fireballs. The aggressiveness of the ship depends on its target, the cannon volleys being less intensive against a sloop than a galleon for example.
Manning the Blade
When the Burning Blade accumulates enough water in its hold, it will enter a defeated state, signaled by emitting a harmless pulse of orange light.
In its defeated state, it will float in the water for 10 minutes before sinking, ending the event. During this time, players can choose to pledge themselves to Captain Flameheart and control the ship themselves by holding Interact
on the Quest Table in the Captain's Quarters. This must be done by the whole crew to successfully pledge to the Burning Blade.
(When entering its defeated state)
(After pledging to Captain Flameheart)
When a crew pledges themselves to the Burning Blade, the previous ship of that crew will scuttle. All damage the Burning Blade took when attacked will be reverted and all water bailed, making the vessel fit for use. Although Players now control the Burning Blade, Voyages and Tall Tales cannot be started. The Burning Blade will automatically become a Grade 1 Reaper's Bones Emissary regardless of any previous Emissary and Emissary Grade, and any previous Alliances will be disbanded. The Burning Blade will be unable to be pledged to by other crews, meaning it can only be sunk by them.
Tribute
Tribute can be gathered for the Burning Blade by completing Dark Rituals at the six Skeleton Camps found throughout the Sea of Thieves. This is done by aligning the constellations found within the Ancient Temples below the camps, directly adding Ancient Knowledge to the ship. There is no limit to the amount of Tribute which can be given to the Blade. Completing Skeleton Camps also replenishes the Obsidian Skeletons aboard the Burning Blade.
The amount of Tribute collected aboard the Burning Blade can be seen on all Map Tables, or by interacting with the Captain's Table aboard the Burning Blade. Each Tribute adds 26,000 for each completion.
Returning the Burning Blade
To end the event, the crew manning the Burning Blade must return it to to Captain Flameheart at The Reaper's Hideout. When handed in, the crew is rewarded with Gold and Reputation depending on the amount of Rituals completed while aboard the Burning Blade. The ship is instantly scuttled and a Mermaid appears to take the players back to their original ship, which has respawned at another island. Note that returning the Burning Blade DOES NOT sell any treasure on board automatically. Hand in your treasures before returning the Burning Blade to benefit from the Reaper Emissary.
(After returning the Burning Blade to Captain Flameheart)
Sinking the Blade
Alternatively, the event can be ended by sinking the Burning Blade. This can be done while either Obsidian Skeletons or Players crew the ship.
- If crewed by Obsidian Skeletons once defeated, the Burning Blade will remain stationnary for up to 10 minutes before sinking. This timer can be greatly reduced by continuous canon fire against it.
- If crewed by Player Pirates, the Burning Blade will automatically sink once defeated.
Rewards
Rewards from the Burning Blade are available by returning the it to Captain Flameheart, sinking the ship, or by simply taking the treasure found aboard in the bottom deck of the ship.

- 26,000 for each ritual completed (14,000 if returned without rituals)

Ashen Roar
The Ashen Roar is a devastating forward-facing weapon that can be fired with a Lever found to the left of the Helm on the Burning Blade. It fires twin fireballs, though requires two minutes to recharge. This weapon has infinite usage. If it hit, it will deal minor damage to the ship but starts multiple fire across it. The amount of fire depends on the size of the ship that was hit: a sloop will have less fire than a galleon for example. Note that the primary purpose of the Ashen Roar is to cripple enemy ships instead of damaging them.
Crew
The crew of the Burning Blade is made up of Player Pirates and Obsidian Skeletons, which defend the ship by using cannons and repairing damage. They have 100 Health. When an Obsidian Skeleton dies, it will respawn. However, unlike Player Pirates, they can only respawn a limited amount of times. Completing a Dark Ritual at a Skeleton Camp will replenish the amount of skeletons found aboard as well as the number of respawns. The number of slots for player pirates matches to the original crew size of the ship that pledged to the Burning Blade. When crewed, the Skeletons will behave much more aggressively against ships in range, discarding their lessened fire power toward smaller ships.
