Settings allow players to view and modify various aspects of the game. It can be accessed from either the Main Menu or in-game through the Game Options Menu, although certain sections can only be accessed from the Main Menu.

Options

Terms in brackets indicate default values for the purpose of this list.

Keyboard and Mouse

Allows players to view and bind most in-game actions to specific keyboard and mouse buttons.

    • Play with a single analogue stick - Move and turn on one stick. This will also change other settings including Fixed Position Interaction Prompts and Single Stick Camera Mode. (Off)
    • Single Stick Camera Mode - If Single Stick is active, enables ability to swap into a mode with full camera control but no movement. (Off)
  • Misc
    • Escape as Back - This setting makes Escape key navigate back in settings menu rather than closing the menu. (Off)
    • Use Virtual Keyboard - Choose whether you need to use a virtual keyboard for text chat. (Off)

Gameplay

  • Input
    • Reduce hold to interact - This setting allows interactions to only require an initial button press rather than a hold. (Off)
    • Reduce hold to use item - This setting allows held items to have their state toggled with a single button press rather than a hold. (Off)
  • Auto Centre Camera
    • Auto Centre Camera - Camera automatically returns to the horizon after a short delay (Off)
    • Auto Centre Delay - Delay in seconds before auto centre camera begins to move. (2.0)
    • Auto Centre Speed - Speed at which auto centre camera moves. (180)
  • Force Feedback
    • Controller Vibration Intensity (100)
  • Misc
    • Automatically float in water - When underwater you automatically float back to the surface. (Off)
    • Show Tall Tales On Map Table (On)
    • Auto-vote on Voyage Proposal (On)

HUD

  • Photo Mode
    • Toggle HUD (On)
  • Menus
    • Toggle Radial Menus - This setting allows radial menus to be opened and closed with two separate button presses rather than a button being held and released. (Off)
    • Sticky Radial Items - This setting allows radial menu items to stay selected when releasing the right stick. (Off)
    • Fixed position for interact prompts - Interaction prompts are fixed in screenspace rather than move within worldspace. (Off)
    • Recentre Mouse in Menus - Moves mouse cursor to the center of the screen when opening barrel menus. (On)
    • Circular Navigation - Loops all navigation within lists and grids. (Off)
  • Banners
    • Island Banners in Adventure (Slimline)

Video Settings

  • (PC only)
    • Resolution Limit - Setting a maximum limit on your resolution can significantly improve performance. If "Native" is selected, the game will use your monitor's resolution. (Recommended)
    • Display Mode - Choose between playing in a Window or Full screen Borderless. (Fullscreen)
    • VSync - VSync stops screen tearing, but may reduce your frame rate. (On)
    • Frame Rate Lock - Unlocking the frame-rate will go to the maximum your PC can support, but setting a frame-rate limit will give a more consistent performance. (Off)
    • Performance Counters - Shows the current frame-rate and network latency (ping) on the screen. (Off)
    • Buffering - Triple buffering may make the frame rate more consistent, but can increase the time between pressing a key and the game performing an action. (Quadruple)
    • Resolution Scaling - Scales the resolution that the game is rendering at by this percentage. (100)
  • Frontend
    • Auto-skip intro animatic - Automatically skip the introduction animatic after the start screen. (Off)

Graphics Settings

  • (PC only)
    • Field of View - Increasing your field of view will render more content on-screen which may impact performance. (78)
    • Default Quality Selection - Default quality selection for graphics settings. (Recommended)
    • Shadow Detail - Improving shadow quality requires more video memory and will affect performance of both the CPU and GPU. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Model Detail - Changes how quickly objects drop to a lower quality. Higher values reduce popping but make the game run slower. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Texture Detail - Increasing texture quality requires a graphics card with a large amount of memory, and it is also recommended that you have a fast hard drive when using the highest detail to avoid texture popping. Setting it too high can cause severe problems. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Water Detail - Water detail affects the quality of waves, ripples and reflections. It will affect both CPU and GPU performance. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Lighting Detail - Lower quality lighting improves GPU performance, but may have a significant negative effect on image quality. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Particle Effects Quality - Affects the quality of some particle effects. Higher settings will typically increase particle counts and add more variation to the particle effects. It will affect both CPU and GPU performance. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Particle Resolution - Affects the resolution at which particles are rendered. It will affect GPU performance. NOTE: Visual quality may vary depending on the particle effect. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Animation Quality - Animation Quality scales the number of potentially active animations. NOTE: Higher values will play more animations and have an impact on CPU performance. (Dependant on device hardware)
    • Unique Mesh Buffer - In high memory usage situations, some items may visibly change to resemble items with smaller memory usage. The larger the buffer the less likely this is to happen. Will affect memory usage. (Dependant on device hardware)
  • Visibility
    • Disable Blur - Disables the blur caused by ghostly treasure. (Off)
    • Disable Screen Shake - Disables the screen-shake caused by cannons, earthquakes, and getting stunned. (Off)
    • Disable Rats on your ship - Disables Rats on your ship. (Off)
  • Color Blindness Filters
    • Color Blindness Filter Mode - This setting applies different color filters to help people with color vision deficiency. Check on the test image if any of those help you. (Off)
    • Color Blindness Filter Strength - This setting changes the strength of the color filter, if enabled. (1.0)
    • Saturation Level - This setting changes the saturation level of the game. Warning! Low saturation levels may make it difficult to distinguish the difference between colors. (1.0)
    • High Contrast 'X Marks the Spot' - This setting allows for a higher contrast when viewing X Marks the Spot on a map. Turn this setting "On" if you are having difficulty seeing the X. (Off)

Xbox Series X

Xbox Series X only.

    • Enable 120 Hz - If this is enabled the game will run at double the frame rate, but resolution will be decreased to 1920 x 1080. On some TVs you may need to disable HDR in the Xbox settings app. (Off)

Audio Setting

    • Master Volume - Adjusts the overall volume level of the game. (100)
    • Music Volume - Adjusts the volume of the music. (80)
    • Shanty Volume - Adjusts the volume of the shanty songs. (80)
    • SFX Volume - Adjusts the volume of the sound effects. (80)
    • Audio Output Mode (Speakers)
    • Enable Spatial Sound (Off)
    • Crew Chat Volume - Adjusts the volume of the crew chat. (80)
    • Crew Chat Output - Choose whether crew chat comes out of your speakers or headphones. (Speakers)
    • Proximity Chat Volume Adjusts the volume of chat from nearby players. (80)
    • Proximity Chat - Adjusts whether chat from nearby players is directional or not. (Directional)
    • Push to Talk - Choose how to use Push to Talk to speak to other players. Off, by holding down the button, or by toggling it on and off. (Off)
    • Player Chat Indicator - Shows an icon whenever you are transmitting chat to other players. (Off)
    • Mute Copyrighted Audio - Mutes all copyrighted audio. (Off)
    • Set audio output to mono (Off)
    • Enable Additional Wheel Turning Sounds - Enables an additional sound every quarter turn of the wheel. (Off)
    • Additional Wheel Sound Volume - Adjusts the volume of additional wheel turning sounds. (80)

Patch history

  • 2.7.0 (November 22, 2022)
    • Tooltips that appear on-screen when interacting with items can now be narrated, providing improved accessibility for those with low vision.
    • With text-to-speech narration already enabled, players can enable tooltip narration within the Language Settings along with configuration options to allow players to define how much of the tooltip is narrated. For more information, head to the Accessibility guide on our support site.
    • Players enabling ‘Let Games Read to Me’ will now find the ‘Narrate Change Only’ setting is now enabled by default for new players.
  • 2.6.3 (October 20, 2022)
    • Players enabling ‘Replace Gamertag on Ship’s Banners’ will now find this setting persists across sessions.
    • Players enabling ‘Replace Ship Names’ will now find all ship names are replaced when browsing owned ships in the Ship’s Log.
  • 2.6.2 (September 29, 2022)
    • Players can now choose to replace gamertags or ship names independently, allowing creators who wish to protect themselves and others they meet on the seas to see Captained ship names if they choose.
    • Captains can now use the ‘Replace Gamertag on Ship’s Banners’ Setting to replace the Captain's name on the banner when the ship is viewed by any other player.
  • 2.6.0 (August 4, 2022)
    • If the Captain's Permissions are set accordingly, crewmates are free to keep expressing themselves during a session by freely applying liveries as before, but these will not be saved. Captains can also easily ‘Revert Ship to Saved Items’ from the Ship Customisation Chest.
    • Map Zoom keybinding can be changed via the Settings Menu.
    • Content creators who choose to use ‘Replace Gamertags’ from the in-game settings will now find that this feature also hides the Captain’s chosen ship name from their viewers, showing one from a predefined list instead.
    • Players on PC will still have the ability to configure how much system memory can be allocated to these decorated ships, ensuring higher-spec hardware can show a wider range of customisations.
    • Players on Xbox are no longer offered the option to ‘Recentre Mouse in Menus’ via the in-game Settings Menu, even when connecting a mouse to the console. This feature is not available on consoles.
    • The description of the ‘Escape as Back’ option has been updated to resolve grammatical errors.

  • 2.4.0 (December 2, 2021)
    • Narration support is now available for the Enchanted Compass and the Golden Wayfinder via the 'Enchanted Compass Proximity Announcer' in the Language settings.
    • Settings menus have now been refreshed, providing new categories with clearer headings for improved ease of use. Accessibility settings have also been moved from their own separate section to the appropriate category for the experience they’re designed to improve.
    • When ‘Jump Up to Move Up’ is enabled, holding the ‘Swim Up’ button at the same time as reading a journal should no longer cause players to be stuck swimming up when they stop reading.
    • The Trident of Dark Tides aim sensitivity settings are now saved between sessions.
    • Players resetting their keyboard and controller settings to default will now find that the settings stay reset after restarting the game.
  • 2.2.0 (June 22, 2021)
    • New Sea of Thieves players will now be offered a range of accessibility settings when first loading the game to help tailor the experience to their needs, along with shortcut access to the wider suite of accessibility settings included in the game.
    • New players are now also offered a simple way to ensure Sea of Thieves is suitable for all the family. Enabling Family Mode will disable voice and text communication with other crews you may meet in the open world. These settings can always be re-enabled later from the Settings Menu.
    • Within the Accessibility Settings, players can select how long pop-up notifications should appear on-screen using ‘Toast Message Duration’.
    • Within the Accessibility Settings on PC, players can now choose a preferred game language independent of the operating system language.
  • 2.0.15 (May 27, 2020)
    • Crew Status Tag Range – The distance at which Gamertags can be seen when ‘Crew Status Tags’ is enabled has now been reduced.
    • Simplified Chinese Support – Sea of Thieves now supports Simplified Chinese localisation across the entire game.
    • Text Chat Censoring – When players try to send a text message that will be censored, a warning notification will appear.
    • Text Size Accessibility – Text sizes and button prompts across the game have been increased to improve accessibility.
    • In-Game Platform Accessibility Settings – Within the game’s accessibility settings, players now have improved control of Text-To-Speech (TTS),
    • Speech-To-Text (STT) and Let Games Read To Me (LGRTM), previously only configurable within the Xbox platform settings.
    • For Text-To-Speech and Let Games Read To Me, the default is set to ‘Not Overridden’ and will use the Xbox platform setting. However, setting this to ‘Enabled’ or ‘Disabled’ will force the feature on/off and override the Xbox platform setting.
        • For Speech-To-Text the default is set to ‘Not Overridden’ and will use the Xbox platform setting. However, setting this to ‘Disabled’ will force this feature off and override the Xbox platform setting.
    • Animation Quality Graphics Setting – A new graphics setting has been added for PC, allowing players to adjust the character animation quality. On higher-spec machines, this will provide a smoother experience when multiple players are on-screen, though higher settings may impact CPU performance.
    • Default Settings for New Players – New players entering Sea of Thieves will now find that both ‘Crew Status Tags’ and ‘Sticky Radial Items’ settings are enabled by default, improving their initial onboarding experience. Existing players will not have their settings changed.
  • 2.0.4 (June 19, 2019)
    • Improvements to ‘Let Games Read to Me’ – When ‘Let Games Read to Me’ is enabled in the Xbox settings, any text messages and pirate chat messages sent from players will be read out. To learn more about ‘Let Games Read to Me’, see our Accessibility Guide.
    • Fishing Keybinding – Players can now equip the Fishing Rod through a keybind in the game settings page.

    • Accessibility Improvements – The ‘Let Games Read to Me’ accessibility options for Xbox One and PC are now available. These are currently supported for players with their language and region set to English US.
    • High Dynamic Range – Support has been improved for HDR-compatible screens on PC. Players can access a ‘HDR Calibration’ page within their Settings to calibrate the brightness of the display.
    • 'Push to Talk' functionality now works correctly on Xbox One when set up in Audio Settings.
    • Resolved an edge case where a Closed Crew could become an Open Crew when the crew owner leaves.

    • Xbox Mouse and Keyboard Support – Players on Xbox can now take full advantage of mouse and keyboard support on their favourite console!
    • Xbox Chatpad Support – Players on Xbox can now use a Microsoft Chatpad to engage in text chat with other players. Press 'T' (Default) to initiate chat or rebind from your Settings menu.
  • 1.4.4 (March 6, 2019)
    • Colour Contrast Accessibility - Updated the colour contrast of selecting items in the Settings menu to better support accessibility for WCAG standards.
    • Push to talk setting now persists between sessions.
    • Sprint now works correctly when bound to 'Q' or 'E' keys.
    • Control Settings pages no longer have unlocalised strings.
  • 1.4.3 (February 6, 2019)
    • Show Nameplates Above Other Crews - New settings option allows players to hide the nameplates of any non-crew members they meet, reducing the opportunity for Stream Sniping.
    • Keybinding for ‘Toggle HUD’ - Players can now assign a keybind for the Toggle HUD option to give you fast access to remove the UI for those beautiful screenshots. The FPS, Ping & Player Chat indicators are also correctly hidden when activating.
    • Particle Quality Slider - Players can control particle quality using a new slider in the Video settings (Windows 10).
    • Triple Buffering - On Windows 10, a new video option allows players to enable Triple Buffering, which will improve the ‘VSync’ option’s performance.
    • Island Shadows - When set to Legendary or Mythical settings, Islands now cast a shadow on the ocean.
    • Slider settings can no longer be set to an unsupported value.

    • Scalable Text Chat - Text chat can now be scaled via the settings menu.

    • Banana Key Binding - The key binding for quick cycling to your bananas has been reset. If you've assigned or customised the button/key that quick cycles to bananas, please reassign this to restore it.
  • 1.3.2 (October 31, 2018)
    • It is no longer possible to map the Push To Talk key to same bind as the row boat keys.

    • View Gamer Card option under Crew Settings will now respond correctly to a left mouse click.

    • Solo sailor crews can now access Crew Privacy settings.

    • Controller Sensitivity - Sensitivity settings have now been doubled. The new '5' sensitivity is equivalent to the previous '10'. Players may have to adjust their settings when they next launch the game.
    • Players on PC will now be able to select 'Options' after being invited to a game.

    • The option to enable and disable the Player Talking Indicator has been added back into Settings.

    • The 'More' button on all radials now properly updates when key bindings are changed and will no longer remain the same button.

    • Colour Blind Accessibility - Filters can now be applied from within settings to assist with red-green and blue-yellow colour blind pirate.
    • The option to lock FPS to 90 now correctly appears in settings.

    • Player chat indicator can now be toggled from the front end settings menu and within the game.

    • Did You Hear That? - When you are transmitting voice over your mic, an icon will now appear on screen to let you know that you are doing so.
    • Colour Blind Accessibility - There is now a High Contrast 'X Marks the Spot' option in the Accessibility Settings. Enabling this will change the red X on the map to white with a black outline, which we understand will be easier to view for red-green colour blind pirates.
    • Aim Sensitivity Slider - Player can customise their controller and mouse sensitivity specifically when aiming with each ranged weapon. The Blunderbuss, Flintlock Pistol and Eye of Reach each have their own slider to adjust.
    • Shhh! - Additional muting options have been added to "My Crew". These now include the ability to mute voice, text chat and non-verbal phrases separately.
  • 1.0.7 (May 15, 2018)
    • Muting all other crews will no longer mute your own crew.
    • Restarting the game will no longer reset the frame rate lock option.
    • Restored missing 90 fps frame rate lock option.
    • Frame rates can now be locked to 100 FPS.

    • {PC Only} Rebinding to the F key will no longer soft lock the radial.
    • Stow and Disengage can now be rebound to the same button on a controller.
    • [PC Only] Half Vsync option was removed. The Frame Lock option should now be used instead.
