Resource Crates

Resource Crates are portable supply containers that can be acquired from the Merchant Alliance as part of a Trade Good Commission, or found all over The Sea of Thieves. These Crates are used to store, haul and deliver Resource Items for personal use or to be sold for the Merchant Senior Traders in exchange of Gold and Reputation. Merchant Representatives only accept Resource Crates when filled. When players have an active Merchant Contract for a specific Resource Crate, they can acquire an empty Crate from any Merchant Alliance Senior Trader to be filled.

Mechanics

A Player can only carry one Crate at a time and cannot use any other items while carrying them. When dropped, Crates emit a white glint from far away, making them easier to spot. Crates will float to the top when dropped in Water, however, they will start sinking to the bottom after some time has passed and disappear. Crates dropped on land or on shorelines will stay in-game for a long time. Untouched Crates will disappear when an Island respawns. Every Crate can be caught with a Ship's Harpoon.

There are three basic Resource Crates and three special Resource Crates. Players can open and close basic Resource Crates and add Resource Items into them from their Inventories. Resource Crates only accept one specific type of Resource Item and can hold up to a maximum of 50 Items.

Two types of Ghostly Resource Crates can be found from defeated Ghost Ships. The Storage Crate of the Damned is occasionally dropped by Grunt Ghost Ships and only contains Wooden Planks and Cannonballs. These Crates act identically to Storage Crates with the only difference being that they can actually be sold to the Merchant Alliance at the risk of losing any items inside. The Cannonball Crate of the Damned is a special Cannonball Crate that holds Ghostly Cannonballs and can be received as a prize for completing a Ghost Fleet World Event. This Crate can also be sold to the Merchants regardless of the items inside.

There are three special Resource Crates that act differently from the classic crates or are acquired from a different source. The Firebomb Crate is different for it has a maximum of 20 Storage slots for Firebombs and it has no specific Quests related to it. The Ammo Crate cannot be opened up like regular Crates and is filled with up to 50 ammunition for Weapons instead. This Crate can be sold while empty and refilled at Ammo Chests without any costs. The Storage Crate is unique in that it cannot be sold and can store every type of Resource item.

Where to find?

Empty Resource Crates can be acquired from Merchant Alliance Senior Trader NPCs at Outposts when Crews have an active Merchant Contract with a Resource Crate delivery order. These Merchant Quests are only found from Bottle Quests and the Senior Trader only supplies Player Crews with a single Crate of the requested type.

Full Resource Crates can be bought from Merchant Alliance Senior Trader NPCs at Outposts. A Cannonball Crate can be bought for 5000 Gold, and a Wood Crate and Fruit Crate can be bought for 3500 Gold. Crews can only purchase one of each crate from any given Outpost every five in-game days.

Aside from this, Resource Crates can be found all over the Sea of Thieves with variable amounts of Resources inside them.

Ghostly Crates are found only from defeated Ghost Ships.

Firebomb Crates can currently only be dug up as a part of various Mercenary Voyages.

Full Ammo Crates can only be found shored on Islands.

Storage Crates can also only be found shored on Islands with variable amounts of any Resource Item inside.

Emissary Mechanics

Any Player Crews sailing as Merchant Alliance Emissaries can receive Emissary Grade Reputation for picking up and putting basic Resource Crates on their Ship for the first time. This benefit is also applicable for Reaper's Bones Emissaries who gain Emissary Reputation for any Treasure items that they steal. Selling Resource Crates to the two companies as Emissaries does not give Emissary Grade Reputation, however, Players do receive Emissary Value, which is counted for the respective Company Emissary Ledger leaderboards. The higher the Crew's Emissary Grade, the more Gold, Reputation and Emissary Value they receive for selling Resource Crates. Players earn more Emissary Value with Merchants for Crates that are commissioned through a Trade Good Commission Quest.

Rewards

Full Resource Crates can be cashed in to Merchant Alliance Senior Traders at any Outpost for Gold and Reputation with the Company. As stated before, Merchant Alliance Emissaries will also receive Emissary Value with the Merchants for selling the Crates while flying an Emissary Flag. Being an Emissary also increases the Gold and Reputation gains for selling Crates. Alternatively, Crews can choose to sell any acquired Crates to the Reaper's Bones Representative at The Reaper's Hideout instead for equal Gold and Emissary Value gains, but less Reputation gains with the Reapers.

The following is a table of the multiplicative Rewards for selling Resource Crates as Graded Emissaries.

Emissary Grade Rewards, Reputation & Emissary Value
Grade 1 Base Reward
Grade 2 +33% Base Reward
Grade 3 +67% Base Reward
Grade 4 +100% Base Reward
Grade 5 +150% Base Reward

Classic Resource Crates have two reward tiers with the Merchant Alliance Company based on whether they are sold as a part of a Trade Good Commission Quest or not. When Crews deliver a filled Resource Crate to a specific Senior Trader marked in the Merchant Quest by the delivery date, they will receive 1,5x as much Gold, Reputation and Emissary Value for the Crates as they would have for selling it without a Quest objective. Delivering Resource Crates as part of Merchant Quests also rewards players with Merchant Alliance Commendations. These bonuses do not apply to Special Resource Crates for they are not tied to any Merchant Quests.

When sold, the whole Crew is rewarded with equal amounts of Gold, Reputation and Emissary Value, while Alliance Members will earn half of the Gold and Reputation Gains, but no Emissary Value.

Resource Crates have a variable value with the minimum and maximum reported Gold rewards documented in the tables below.

List of Resource Crates
